I'm going to put soda crystals and vinegar on the shopping list, but wanted to ask - is it any kind of vinegar in particular,
Yes...Harry Ramsdens finest ! :rotfl:

I'm dissappointed in you Old Style'ers....paying for chemicals to pour down the drain :naughty:

All sinks should have some sort of bottle trap underneath. It's held on by 2 hand tight nuts. Unscrew these and remove the trap to clean from time to time.....how simple is that ? The only thing to remember is not to wash out the trap in the sink whilst you have it your hand  I must be the worst for forgetting this

If you think removing the trap is difficult........It's 1000 times easier than changing a car tyre !

I don't get involved with waste traps Rob, or changing car tyres for that matter, what's the point of being married if he can't do the dodgy jobs about the place?

I put about 2 dessertspoons of soda crystals and a spalsh of vinegar down each plughole (It's a double sink on one drain) but you have to put the soda in first followed by the vinegar. The chemical reaction takes place on contact and shifts the blockage,( I knew that A level would come in handy one day LOL.)

Do you think this would work on a shower drain. Ours is running slowly and sometimes backs up, doesnt smell very nice either. I know the problem is hair and soap gunge yuck.

If this doesnt work has anyone got any ideas.

    Hi Glenda :hello:
A couple of things to check. Waste pipe must have a constant fall from shower to waste outlet....obvious !
The waste pipe should be clipped regularly to prevent it sagging and causing a build up of sediment leading to a blockage.
If it joins another waste outlet, the joining connection should be correctly fitted.(seen loads where an equal 'T' has been fitted the wrong way round). The waste entry of the 'T' onto the straight has a curve to direct the water. If fitted the wrong way round the water is directed upstream first then backs up, causing a blockage over time.
If the shower waste exit is the first in line, and it's 40mm...then comes the bath waste...after the bath the pipe size should be the next size up....50mm.

I'll have a look under my sink in the minute. I use Sainsburys Basic vinegar at 17p a bottle. It works just as well. Other value vinegars probably work just as well.

My bathroom sink fills up and water goes down very slowly too. We've checked the U-bend and that's fine, but the problem still goes on. I end up washing my face with a big pool of dirty water collecting in the sink. YUCK.

Any ideas? Would it be related to our kitchen sink downstairs by any chance?
  • My kitchen sink is a bit blocked hence it is draining away very slowly. Can you suggest something to put down it other than Mr Muscle??? Many thanks
