Ravenheat RSF 84ET help!

Merry Christmas forum members!
The hot water can get very hot then cold usually on/off/on/off on my Ravenheat combi. Occasionally the CH will go off but then comes back on.
I have looked at the manual and wonder if it might be:
1. HW / CH temperature sensors?
2. Over temp. stat?

Any help or suggestions would be great! Does anyone know where I can get reasonably priced spares from?
Regards

I bought a diverter valve for my Ravenheat from this site http://www.ezypart.co.uk/ earlier in the year. Not sure if they have what you want, but it's worth a look.
  • Hi,
Changed the hot water temp sensor this weekend, but can still take a long time to get the water hot. Central heating can occasionally go off still!
    Any advice please!

  • Hi & Thanks for the help,
I have posted a message on the diynot.com site and there was a similar posting which might help - apparently some boilers do not work correctly when the temp. settings are at their max.

  • Hi,
Still not fixed! replaced HW sensor (no improvement).
So still have intermittent HW can get very hot, then cold for ages.
CH now starting to be a bit unreliable. When first switched on burner will cycle on/off for first few minutes then come on and heat up OK. Occasionally will go off and when cooled down (reset button pressed) usually comes back on.
SO what to replace next? CH sensor? over temp. stat? Boiler!
If you have any advice/help I would be very grateful for it, even if you can recommend a good reliable combi. I have been told that Worcester Greenstars are good, anyone agree?
    Regards, mrsparky
  • Although the problem is with HW try replacing the Central Heating Thermistor (green plug type sensor on the right hand side of the boiler) this is a common fault with these boilers.

I'm a Corgi registered CH engineer. Unfortunately Ravenheat have a terrible reputation amongst my trade and are one of the least reliable boilers on the market. It is difficult to fault diagnose over the internet; apart from the fact you should be Corgi registered to work on any part of a boiler as it's classed as a gas appliance.

I've got a Ravenheat, though not your model. If you can take the outer casing off and see the vision panel (look in your manual) then when it is playing up, ie not heating, see if the pilot is lighting but not the main burner. Best done in the dark. If it cycles like this, without the main burner firing, for about 6 cycles it will 'lock out' ie you need to press the reset button. Sometimes the main burner will fire and sometimes not, so it is infuriating to diagnose. BG turned out on my insurance and even with his laptop with Ravenheat's diagnostics on it he was still stumped. He eventually rang them and they admitted their diagnostic logic advice wasn't up to date. It was the cable proving the signal to the flame failure electrode. Apparently if this cable is defective, it won't provide the feedback to the controller to fire the main burner. He replaced this and it was fine. It costs a few pounds for the cable if it is this. Google 'Ravenheat spares'. The cable code should be shown in your manual supplied with the boiler.
  • Thanks for all the advice. Last weekend I replaced the CH thermister, Isolated CH circuit at boiler and slackened off thermister catching water in plastic milk bottle (about 4L in total). This seems to have fixed the problem, even the hot water is heating up & staying on!
Hope this helps anyone else stuck.

  • Can anyone offer any help with my Ravenheat boiler? I bought it in 2005 and it has always had an intermittant fault, it keeps having spates of going on and off. I first reported it straight after install, but they have never come out and have always told me it must be something other than the boiler. When I have tried to insist on a service call they have said that if it is working when they arrive they will charge me and will go away again, apparently 'it isn't up to them to diagnose faults in my central heating system'. It has now got so bad it isn't really working at all and surprise surprise they don't want to know me.
