Just need a bit more info - What are you using to write on here? Why did you run system restore yesterday? Have you had any funny virus warnings or system warnings or any obviously fake popup messages? What version of Windows are you running?

When you double click on icons, do you get an error message at all?

If you pressed the WINDOWS KEY and R together (to get the Run dialoge), what happens if you type in IEXPLORE.EXE and press enter?

Similarly, what happens if you press CTRL SHIFT DEL, the FILE > RUN > IEXPLORE.EXE

    Hi,

Oh gosh, thanks for your help.
I have had a problem where I couldnt access 1 website only, I posted a hijack this log on here and it was ok, so I tried a system restore but all my icons went so I used the dsi to log o and found out about ctrl/alt/del and they all came back and I logged in, however now when I press them nothing happens.

There is a new icon there system information (SIW) so I pressed that and at the top there was a facebook logo so I pressed that and thats got me onto me my web browser chrome.

Im on windows xp and I have avast running.

I have had no noticeable fake messages.

When I press the windows key and r it takes me to my documents as does ctrl alt del explorer.exe

When I double clck the icons I dont get any messgage at all, the green light that flickers when the laptop is doing something does not even come on.

I have run malwarebytes and nothing has been found.

    Thanks
    karen

So you don't have a Start Menu, or the clock and icons in the bottom right corner, etc?

What happens if you try CTRL SHIFT ESCAPE? Do you get the task manager?

Try starting the computer in safe mode with networking - i.e. restart the computer, and keep hitting F8 until you get the options.

Oh okay, SIW is a legit program but strange that you don't remember installing it.

Sounds like a case for a reinstall. Do you have another computer or just the DSI? Do you have any method of backup?

Well if it was my computer, I'd reinstall.

Do you have a Windows disc to reinstall with, as you might be able to do a non-destructive repair install...

Nothing is ever simple, I do have a disk that came with the pc but it is for Vista and I took the laptop to a shop when it was new and had xp installed!
