Cheapest Possible Car Hire

Hi
Me and my fiancee are going on honeymoon this year, and we're planning a multi location trip, starting in France, going through Italy to Switzerland, then back to France.
We're hoping to hire a car in France, and return it to a separate place in France. Firstly, are there any rules and regulations that mean we won't be able to drive it through Italy and Switzerland?
Most importantly, we're looking for the best price going. I did a simple search on europcar.com, and it came up in dollars first of all, saying the rental was $390. Then I put the same criteria in saying we were living in Britain, and the cost was £500! How come the price is so different, and can you get away with saying that you live in the US!?!
I've also looked at some of the price comparison and broker sites. The cheapest is via hotwire.com, to carrentals.com which all give a fairly decent price, but unfortunately are all in dollars too, so I'm worried that the same issues may occur re not living in the US!
Please, any help would be awesome!
Cheers

The cheapest way is to hire a car in France from LeClerc or HyperU supermarkets. You will be able to drive it in all EU countries on the standard insurance, this also includes Switzerland but you have to return it to the same supermarket. Cost at our local HyperU for two weeks in July for a Fiat Punto is 319€ with a 200€ cash deposit.0
