Slightly off topic but most security are told to let them walk out before they go after them because it means a prosecution is easier.

This makes sense (and I'd have thought is the only way to prove beyond reasonable doubt someone is stealing something!- we used to have a school policeman who explained the law to us, and as a staff member my manager later confirmed this to me: a shopper can pick up an item, place it in their pocket/bag/hat....so long as they pay before they leave the store they are good to go.) We had this way of approaching people who'd do this and left us worried they'd do a runner without coughing up, for example, one girl picked up a belt and put it on before picking up her bag and moving over to the rest of the sale line. I walked over to her and let her know "we've got some excellent shoes that go with that belt your trying on"- never saw such a red face! She was only about 12 and her mum just glared at her!!

I've witnessed several times shoppers in my local Sainsburys shopping and using their bag-for-life as a basket, security guard doesn't blink and eye and I've seen at least two of them pay- remember thinking it was odd to see them unpacking an already packed bag onto the conveyer belt!

But the OP was able to get to the customer service desk to complain without seeing the security guard doing anything, I can't really judge (but I want to!!) because I wasn't there but sounds like for whatever reason, he wasn't doing his job.

cute move on the girls part, but good for you being so subtle, less hassle than being accusing.

Shrinkage also occurs when customers dump stuff in the wrong temperature sections. Such as fresh pizzas in the frozen, coleslaw in the sweets etc.

One day, I had to dispose of £80 of food because the fresh stuff was too warm to put back in the chiller or too frozen up. £12 of this was a beef joint. I have never seen a customer doing this either when working or shopping as a customer myself.

If the customers dumped things in the right temperature section - such as yoghurts in the cooked meat, that's fine. If you have change your mind about something which is fresh or frozen, please either put it back in the right temperature section or hand it in to a colleague who will put it away for you.

I don't like customers using the bottom of their sprog's pushchair either for carrying stuff before paying as they may 'forget' to put out a bottle of wine or some nappies. There are a few old dears that put a few things in their wire basket on their 3 wheeled walking aid. At least I can see they have got everything out.

I was quite shocked when I went into Tesco's last week just generally at the prices that seem to be much higher, I haven't been in there for a month and it was a real eye opener. But I think one of the problems is that a lot of our food now is imported, as the economy is so bad and our £ so weak it pushes up the prices of our imports, hence why things are cheaper one week in the supermarket and then the same thing is higher the following week.

Having said all this, we have been shielded for so long and have had relatively 'cheap' food, I say cheap as a couple of years ago I went to France and the prices in their supermarkets made me realise how lucky we are in the UK with the cost of our food.

We have such a vast choice of foods now in the supermarkets compared to years ago and I think as a nation we have become greedy in how much we buy and consume when really we could get by on much less (and probably will have to) I have stopped being sucked in by so called 'offers' as I generally find they aren't all that good value for money anyway and you end up just buying stuff because it is on offer.

I now just make a list and buy what's on it, this keeps my grocery bill down.

I noticed Aldi raised their fruit and veg offer from 49p to 69p - that appeared to happen as one hit. I calculate that to be a 40% increase!!

You know I was so shocked when I heard about this "common one" by my manager, couldn't quite believe it until they place me on the door (greeting and saying goodbye for 8 hours!) and I saw one women come in, and then leave setting off all the alarms, turned out there was no baby in the buggy despite her constant checking and fumbling-but there were an awful lot of clothes! I feel scarred for life- I cannot look at buggys and prams in the same way anymore, just can't believe anyone would stoop so low, its not as if I worked in a bread and milk shop it was an overpriced over-trendy fashion store!

    Hi,

Thansk but can't take the credit! We had our manager drill this one into us at several points! I think I'd have otherwise used my radio to hot-tip the on site security team (we had codes for these people!) and leave it up to them, actually prefer the former but you never know which members of the public carried knives or bore grudges-no matter what their age as one manager found out to her detrement after banning one girl from the store for theft, (her mistake was to deal with the offence head on rather then contacting the security team) she had to be walked to her car by security staff for quite a while after that incident after the girl contacted her family to "come sort her out"!
