The thing that scares me most is that winter gas bill.
I can't remember the last time I bought a dress or skirt. New.

Me neither, I really wouldn't want to go down that road.
I would go round the bend without my job.

    Just to add my misery.

Our company has just brought out a competitor and we are all meant to be jumping for joy. However the competitor has branches on the doorstep of our current ones, so will certainly mean branch closures and redundancies. I have been in similar situations in the last two jobs and been made redundant twice from both previous posts so I can see what is coming.

To further add insult to injury, although our company has just spent £150M on buying out this competitor, they have slashed the commision scheme, moved the goalposts to make it unattainable - which leaves everyone in my job £350 a month worse off.

Really don't know how we are going to manage financially. I have been in tears a lot the last couple of days because it is so hard work - long days no breaks - ever! and stressful here, yet they do that!
The opposite of what you know...is also true

But many working people get benefits whilst at work, child tax credit and or working families tax credit, so if you have more children you can also get more benefits

i am getting so fed up of things rising in price including food, but wages never going up. the income for my job has gone up about 20% in the last 10 years whereas food, petrol, bills have probably gone up 200%. so what is going on, the future doesn't look good to me?

Yes, I agree - what I find really scary is the amount & frequency of the price rises.
Food price rises used to be a few pence per item & probably applied once or twice a year. Now, the same item seems to go up by 10-20% every week!
Tesco Value Baby Wipes doubled from 18p to 36p in one hit. A couple of weeks a go I bought a bag of frozen rice (not on offer), it was 90p - last week it was £1, this week £1.30!
Some things I haven't bought for a few months have doubled or trebled in price - some of the prices now are just bonkers! There is a whole range of stuff that is simply not affordable anymore.
And.... this is before we are hit with the full impact of too dry weather on crops this year!

I reckon there must be some very creative accounting when it comes to calculating inflation @ around 5% - it has to be massively more than that in the real world!
And.... as you say no rise in wages - infact in many cases they have gone backwards!

To be honest, the only way I survive is thanks to the 'Grabbits', 'Glitches', 'Vouchers/Coupons' & very good savvy shopping advice on this Forum. I really feel for people, though, particularly the elderly, who may not have access to such a valuable resource.

Problem is - there comes a point when you just can't cut back anymore!
I'm having a massive 'plan-ahead for the Winter' campaign, stock-piling provisions, clothes, bedding for extra warmth, foraging for wood, making jams, chutneys, freezing veg etc. - there is a really good thread on it - otherwise I know I'm going to be in trouble!
    It's almost Dickensian-style, though, isn't it?

rather than rant and moan please can you be a bit more constructive and suggest a fair system that ensures:

    1. Working parents earn more money than non-working parents so it's worthwhile for them to go to work.

    2. Parents who are not working have enough money to look after their children.

The existing system isn't that unfair. What's unfair is that some people have completely the wrong attitude and abuse the system rather than work and contribute to it.

It does seem Dickensian, but for us it's now a way of life.
I don't think it'll get any better either. I don't see how it can?
