  • My online banking won't let me do that. It just says "invalid account number" for some reason. The nice man in the mortgages department confirmed that they don't let you overpay using online banking. If I want to overpay I'll have to use the 0845 number or go to the branch.

Which bank do you use and which company is your mort with?

I use halifax for both and for money laundering reasons you cannot do it yourself online. But if you sent the funds from another bank you would be allowed. Or at least that's what they told me a while ago.

I am the same as yourself. I don't see how it's less of a money-laundering risk sending funds from another bank but never mind ;)

Mr Fresian still isn't 100% and he's being marched to the doctors tomorrow, much to his great distress. The benefit of not having gone is that I have put £100 of our holiday money towards my overpayment today (the rest came from my sealed pot) I'd rather have gone on my holidays, but never mind.

An accidental afternoon nap put paid to my plans of Amazon listing, but I will try and do it tomorrow :D

Happy new diary and good luck with your mortgage busting. I can tell you, it is so worthwhile bashing away at it, we started overpaying ours probably about 5 years or so ago, i think we were lucky in that our Building society allowed any amount of overpayments so we just started by upping our s/o by a little bit a month and then liking what we were seeing, we kept putting the payments up and it was all paid off by November last year - I think about 5 years earlier than it would otherwise have been. It's such a good feeling now, although we still have rent & bills to pay for DD being at uni, but it's so good knowing the house is all ours. I used to think what's the point if it was only £20 a month or so extra, but once I caught the bug and realised all these £20's or so added up, I was hooked. Anyway, enough ramblings, just wanted to tell you it really is worthwhile and when you get your mortgage statement in and see the actual capital coming down significantly and not just the interest, that's such a good feeling. Good luck. I'm off to subscribe now!

    I love your name!

I've just been investigating the PAD thread that other posters have been talking about, and think it's a great idea. It's amazing how much you can spend each day without thinking about it, yet debts always come last of the pile.

Thanks for the inspiration, and good luck with the mortgage!

    Morning all :D

I have a couple of things to report this morning:

I opened a savings account with Sainsbury's which lets me make 5 withdrawals a year. I'll make small PADs into that and when I have a reasonable amount, for example £100, then I'll withdraw it and overpay with it. Larger overpayments will be made over the phone or in the branch. I also get double Nectar points on my shopping at Sainsbury's for a year now having opened this account, so will make sure to shop there a little more often :D

I've redeemed another Amazon voucher from SB so that should be with me in a week or two. I used the credit that was in my account previously to buy Papa Fresian a book for Father's Day, so no spend there so far. I do have to buy Mr F's dad a Chocolate Orange today (he's pathological about his love for them) but they're half price in Tesco just now so guess where we're going? ;)

Small payment today of £1.33 into the new overpayment account. Does anyone know how to work out daily interest so I can use that as my goal for overpayments? I suspect it's small given the size of my mortgage and the low rate I'm on, but it's nice to know nonetheless.
