Is there a statute of limitations as to how long they can chase the money for? I got (unknowingly) overpaid £4,000 while I was with my 2 children's father. The Tax Credit Office realised this, and started claiming it back on our joint claim (so we didn't receive any tax credits for a couple of years). Since splitting up with their dad, I started a single person's claim and although I was originally advised that the outstanding overpayment of £2,000 would be written off because I has split up with their dad, I was more recently informed that the debt would be split between the two of us. So I now owe £1,000.

Is there a time limit on how long after the overpayment that the Tax Credit Office ask for the overpayment to be paid back? If so, how long is it?

today I received Provisional tax credits statement for 6/4/10-5/4/11, it showed child tax credit £547.50 minus payment made by us £0.00, amount of overpayment from EARLIER YEAR already collected from payment made so far £547.50. Amount due to you £0.00. Overpayment up to 5/4/10 of this £547.50 has already been collected back from you. So how about the two overpayment notices which they send me couple days ago just ignored???? Really confused!!! HELP PLEASE!!!

There isn't a time limit, other debts have a 6 year period from contact but the DWP/HMRC are able to come back at anytime to reclaim overpaid money. There was a thread on here about someone from the 1990's being overpaid and looking for the money back so be prepared for a notice to come in at anytime.

It sounds like your full overpayment has been collected but you won't receive any tax credits this year, that's how I interpreted it. Hopefully someone else will know for sure :)

Let me add to this 4000 is for 06 to 07 where we were together till 29 of July 07 when they were informed of the split and the renwel was done before we split up so all money should of been fine after words continued to pay thinking it was money owed for the first month I left it then after that more payments came I was young in slot of debt and used it to pay for debts and to get by really they paid me up to the renewal the next year no paper work was revived until 09 stating that our joint claim had ended funny enough thought I would of got that year before
