Liz why don't you pop into a local greengrocer and see if they have a choice of the varieties mentioned and ask their opinion? You could even do a taste test if they sell the potatoes loose. :D

Funny you say that, Kathy. It's as a result of doing that at three places that I've put the question on OS. Three different answers, each delivered with absolute conviction and sincerity.

I think I'm getting the idea that this is a teensy bit subjective...

LOL! In South Africa we had potatoes. Just potatoes. No varieties, just buy 'em or don't. :rotfl:

BIG learning curve over here - what to buy?

I vote for McCain's Home Roaties - not OS but work well every time...

    Er.... yuck.

Moving hastily on, I think I'll be going with the MPs after all.

I'll blame you lot if I get it wrong...

It was Heston Blumenthal - the programme where it took 3 days () to cook a chicken.
Another vote for Maris Pipers, they are the best I've ever found for roasties.

Definately Maris Pipers! Even my kids can tell if I use another variety.

I think most potatoes do ok - I prefer KE, MP, Estima but will roast almost any 'old' potatoes :)

The only ones I really avoid are Nadines - they seem to be neither use nor ornament - why the supermarkets stock them I know not  They are very sweet and dont seem to cook properly whatever I do with them.
