car has been cloned!
Phone call today from a friend asking what hubbie is doing in town XX. I say he is at home and they say they've been following his car for the last 10 minutes - except the car is on our drive. Same car (make & model), same colour, same number plate. different edition lettering on the back!
Phone police who have noted the number plate and suggest hubbie keeps ID with him as there is a chance he could be stopped now the number plate has been flagged. Also faxed the DVLA.
Anything else we should be doing?

er yes
like how do you know you dont have the cloned car?
obviously on this site many people like to be evasive with information so you are probably going to come back and say you bought it new and drove it off the production line in stuttgard0 -

That was the police's first question.
We've owned the car for 4 years and we bought the personalised plate from the DVLA and had it on the previous car and transferred it to this car in 2007.
Fairly conclusive then, according to the police.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. Are you 100% sure your friends got the plate correct and it wasn't just very similar?? I would have a thought that private plates would be very silly to clone especially if they are pretty unique like TED 2 for example. As its a private plate I would say you can rule your car out as the clone if there is a clone. The only other scenario is the DVLA sold the plate twice but then for it to end up on the same model car and colour would be a big coincidence lol.
Just to add to your question anything else you should do?? I would keep a log of where you have been and the times, atleast then if the cloned car does anything it shouldn't be doing you can look back at the log if questioned and see where you were and who you were with if the need for a witness arises. Probably a bit OTT but in 4 months when they come knocking for armed robbery asking where were you on the 15 june atleast you won't have to rack your brain. In all likelyhood though the owner of the cloned car isn't even aware of it.Everyones opinion is the most important.....no wonder nothing is ever agreed on.0 -

Friends were behind the clone when they were on the phone to me, so they were reading the number plate to me.
Its not so obvious as TED 2. If you didn't know us you may not realise it was a private plate, format is X1 XXX. So if you didn't know our surname sounds like XXX and you may think it is just an old plate, though a bit of thought and you'd realise the car is newer than that.
To give an example if his name was " ray jones" the plate would be R3 JNS. So its not that obvious a personalised plate, but memorable to a friend who sees the car and thinks we are nearby.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. did the friends keep following ? If its not far then why not drive there in the evening and have a good root about the estates and see if you can see it parked up. I'd happily go on a day trip and spend 5 hrs hunting if it was my car cloned. What town was it seen in ?0
