Car tyres
Tokld by a local supplier said that with my low mileage (8000 miles a year) on a Honda Civic not worth buying premium tyres. Trouble is I end up replacing the cheap (£48!!!) every year or so.
is he stringing me a line? Should I go for some Bridgestones or Michelins?
Help me out here....please

he has regular custom from you
£48 doesnt sound cheap anyway, if they are bread and butter rims
whats the alternative offerings in your local rag look like?0 -
Depends which aspect you consider important:
- Longevity of the tyres
- Or the ability to rapidly bring you to a stop on a wet road when something goes wrong ahead of you.

Try Blackcirles.com .
I ordered the Toyo Proxes CF1 for my Civic from them. They are only £52.85 fitted ,and that can be done at a garage near to you of your choice.
I live in a town full of roundabouts and after driving for 6 months on them would never put budgets back on my vehicle.0 -
From past experience and experience of work vehicle and friends cars if you stick on some decent Michelins you will get in excess of 40k on a set of tyres.
Energy are a luttle slippy in the wet due ti the eco thing, Primacy are better in the wet and last well.
Are you sure your wheel geometry is ok, are they wearing oddly, i have just got 2 yrs and nearly 50k out of four Toyo T1rs, though i did rotate them.0 -
Unless you really squeeze every ounce of performance out of your car, a decent mid-range tyre should do fine. On no account would I fit the cheapest available, though. You can't be sure what you are getting and the worst just aren't, in my opinion, safe.
I'm another very satisfied Toyo user, FWIW.0 -
So out of Interest what are these "Cheap" £48 tyres?0

Also what size are the tyres on the Honda?
The older ones were generally only something like a 185/65/15, and even the newer ones are 205/55/15. Cheap tyres for either size should give change from £40 fitted quite easily.
Nankang NS2s are about £40 fitted for the 185s and these have a reputation for being both reasonable tyres and lasting for 20-30,000 miles on older, lighter cars (8,000 seems very low to me -- I've put 8,000 miles on a pair of Toyo T1Rs, a tyre known to wear quickly, and they still have more than 5mm left).
Is your dealer supplying remoulds I wonder? These tend to grip well but the lifespan isn't that great.0 -
You really should be getting better than 8000miles out of nearly any tyre - track specials excluded. Shop wisely and go for a more premium brand. Where abouts in the country are you? If in the south to south west I usually use Micheldever tyres as a bench mark for price and then use this to bargain other retailers or at least to get the same price from one of their pro-tyre outlets.0

To be fair the tyres tensd to just start to deflate - but the last one I managed to get a screw in
I will give BlackCircle a go - they quote me £56 for the Toyo, fitted at he place that quoted me £48 for the cheap one. Can't for the life of me remember the brand he quoted. He did say they didn't do Toyo ?0 -

What do you mean by deflate?
Could it rust/corrosion inside the rim where the bead fits/seals.
I had this some time ago and the tyre shop burnished off the corrosion and then treated them with some form of "paint".
Lots of roundabouts might also be an issue as PP said.
I don't think tyres last like they used to, premium or not, on the "average" car. I have had Pirellis and Bridgestones on company cars, wear just as quickly as mid range tyres, when I have taken the car over and I don't burn around (well v. occasionally). 20K ish on the front and 40/45K on the rear is average, I remember 30k and 60K 10 years back."If you act like an illiterate man, your learning will never stop... Being uneducated, you have no fear of the future.".....
