    Isn't "affordable" a subjective word?

Short answer, No. Boarding schools are never inexpensive, some are cheaper than others but never cheap. There are some boarding schools in the Southport area, check out their fees.

The website for the Independent Schools Council has a search function, you could start there.

No doubt scholarships are available if you are of limited means and little Johnny is a genius.
    Been away for a while.
  • Hulme Grammar School in Oldham is an excellent private school, however, they don't take boarders. I have not heard of any boarding schools in the Oldham area.

    Google State boarding schools.

They are not independent (private) schools, they are state schools where the children board. The education part is free as usual, parents just pay for the boarding part, so it's about half the cost of a private school. Used by lots of military families.
Cash not ash from January 2nd 2011: £2565.:j

OU student: A103 , A215 , A316 all done. Currently A230 all leading to an English Literature degree.

Any advice given is as an individual, not as a representative of my firm.

What is it you're actually after? A private school or boarding? You won't get a cheap private school, but as others have said some people's definition of cheap will be way off line with what others think. What you have to remember with private schools is what you'll have to pay for in addition to the basic fees. My friend has her sons in private school and I was amazed to hear that she has to pay for all his exams - I think some schools include them in the fees (which presumably would be then higher to reflect that) but in her case she pays for every exam they sit. School trips tend to be a bit more than the average week skiiing in Austria etc - she's just finished paying for a trip to China for one son and the other will be going to New Zealand.
You need to decide exactly what it is you're looking for and then properly research your options

I would be very concerned about putting my child in the care of a 'cheap, inexpensive' school.
    Gone ... or have I?

Seriously, what is inexpensive in your head???
For some £7k a term is a bargain, for others £5k is a stretch!!!!
Hulme is very good, but no boarding. But if you board, you can go a bit further afar, otherwise whyboard?
Rishworth used to do boarding, but don't know if they still do?
    Girl or a boy?
Whittington (sp?) school for girls is supposed to be exceptional.
