Are there any weight loss supplements that actually work?

Hi folks, just browsing around boots.com and in the chemist the other day and looking at the huge variety of weight loss supplements. Has anyone ever tried one that worked? I know there are no magic pills that do it all for you but if I could find something to just give me a wee boost alongside my healthy eating I'd be thrilled. A friend of mine get's Alli prescribed from her Dr (she says its actually stronger than Alli) and reckons it works wonders. She is sticking to her diet but since taking it she is losing 3-5lbs every week rather than the 1-2lbs she had been losing. I'm sure my GP won't prescribe it to me so was just wondering if anything available without prescription actually helped. I took adios for a while a couple of years back but I seemed to lose the same amount whether I took them or not.....

On a different note anyone know anything about appetite suppressants? My appetite is sadly huge and I'm really struggling with eating smaller portions.....

I hope this doesn't sound rude but I am aware that the theory is move more, eat less and follow a sensible diet accompanied by exercise (which I am trying my hardest to do) so please don't all of you come on here to tell me that. I am not looking for a miracle just a bit of a boost if it is possible.
Thanks

I don't know but I was looking at some of them online too but noticed that you can't take most of the shop bought ones if you have thyroid problems. I have an underactive thyroid so can't take things like adios which is a shame as I really want a pair of pink sequinned hotpants lol

Please don't take just anything (that promises fast weight loss) They are full of god know's what, and people have died taking them, Or ended up with severe heart problems. The best that I have read is alli. If you can't afford them, Talk to your gp about them, If you are obese they should prescribe them to you, if that gp does not find another.

I understand about your appitite as I too have the same problem hence why I got so big in the first place. I actually kick started my weight loss using a meal replacement diet (cambridge, lighter life - dearest, weight, exante-cheapest and online, and lipotrim-available from most participating pharmacies) There are many VLCD (very low calorie diets), may be a Quick fix and you have to be careful, But what I lost doing lipotrim never crept back on, and now I am following Weight Watchers. You could also try cutting your carbs out, following low fat version of Atkins, all the above will make your body go into ketosis OR mild ketosis which stops the hunger after about day 3.

    What about drinking green tea?

I read an article in 'Women's Health' magazine about some of the benefits.I cut out the article from the magazine, and have had a look on the website, but can't find the article,so can't post a link (sorry).

In a nutshell, according to the article 'The Secret Life of Green Tea',drinking two to three cups a day can lower BMI and in overweight and obese adult exercisers and also 7% more adbominal fat was burned when they drank green tea when compared with other caffeinated drinks. It also can keep teeth healthy, reduce the chance of skin cancer, prevent stroke and decrease lung cancer risk (regardless of smoking status apparently).

I'm sure there's masses of information out there about the benefits of green tea,if you're interested.

I drink various green teas regularly, and certainly feel that it's beneficial, plus being a pleasant drink.

One of the best is. Shaking the head from side to side when asked if you need a second helping.
I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.

There are ones that actually work from the first time you have a tablet till you stop taking the twice a day tablet but i think that once you stop taking them you put the weight back on
I know a couple of people that lost 7lb in the first week and so on
But like said above they could be harmful as you dont know whats in them and i havnt seen them in a local pharmacy

Thanks folks for all the answers. Think I've been having a bad day - wouldn't normally be thinking along these lines. Think I might speak to my GP for a bit of general advice and support, maybe mention the alli and see what she says. My BMI is around 30 but think my GP will say to just diet and exercise.... We'll see, maybe hypnotherapy is what I need! :o

Shaking my head when asked if I want seconds is something I try to do but to be honest I'm not fat simply because I'm an ignorant greedy pig - there is more to it than that.

Well, onwards and upwards, will just try harder to practice moderation and will power :A

Yes am trying to drink the green tea but as I don't normally drink hot drinks I don't often remember. Managed one cup today, maybe I'll do 2 tomorrow....
