Ahhh actually not a simple fix !! Malwarebytes tried to install by data stick but at finish displays message "access is denied" also in bottom left of screen displays " critical error damaged hard drive clusters detected private data at risk" Would nothing at all show up or even partially load in the event of a hard drive failure ???
It's a simple fix, if you actually listen to the people who know how to fix it.
Follow the instructions in post #7. Let us know if you fail with those instructions.
There is nothing wrong with your hard drive. It's just a fake warning message. The same malware has set your files to 'hidden'.0 -

if you can start safe mode run malwarebytes from here.0

To be fair, I don't think he is being difficult. What is a walk-through for us can look like a labyrinth for the inexperienced.0

My husband's pc was infected with this malware last week and after several days and numerous attempts it is still not completely back to normal.
I used all the instructions in the link supplied and although MB picked up several problems and unhide restored most of the programmes and desktop, some files still show as "empty" and system restore will not function (all restore points prior to the infection have been deleted now but previously it would try to run but unsuccessfully).
To the OP - I was able to start and access the internet using "safe mode with networking". I was able to update MB and download SpybotSearch&Destroy and also run them both...for some reason though I wasn't able to download Adaware (I was logged in as administrator but message said I wasn't!).
A question for the "techies" - although the pc is now functioning ok-ish (despite the SR problem and some missing files) does this mean that the malware is now gone? Also - is there anything we can do to access previous restore points?0 -

Impossible to say without looking deeper (though id hazard a guess its still infected)
Please run COMBOFIX
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe
Shut down your anti virus
Follow the simple instructions it gives
Post the COMPLETE log it creates in a NEW thread (Split into sections if need be) ~ if there are loads of 'SNAPSHOT' pages then leave them out
If it comes up with a RENAMING error then RIGHT click the exe file and RENAME and call it QWERTY (Making the complete file name 'QWERTY.exe') Or SAVE as 'QWERTY' on download
(If no log comes up or you lose it, COMBOFIX.TXT can be found in C drive):idea:0 -
