Bought A Television

Hi
I'm new to the forum, Can somebody help me. On the 10th June I saw a television advertised on a website & bought it as it was a good price & it said "Special offer" buy today as the price will go up tomorrow back to full price. having checked the website again this morning It's now come down another £30 for 2 Days (Sat 11th & Sun 12th June) If I'd have known this I would have waited an extra day to get the extra money off. The question is how do I stand can I ask for the extra money back as i feel I've been duped into buying it there & then as they advertised it was going up or is it at their discretion what they charge & when. Any help would be apprieciated

Your not really that new, just dont post much ;)

not really the section to ask this is for site feedback, might be better in the consumer rights section.

It's commonly known as "sod's law" and is generally just tough luck. You could try appealing to their better nature but they are under no legal obligation to offer you a refund.

Once I've bought something at the price I am happy with, I tend not to look at it again, to avoid getting cross if it goes down in price!

How would you feel if the price had increased by £30?

Where do you think the supplier would stand if they came back 2 days later and asked for the extra £30?

  • Provided that the TV hasn't been dispatched yet, there's nothing to stop you contacting the company concerned and telling them that you wish to cancel the transaction under the distance selling regulations.
(you can do this after it's been sent and within 7 working days following the day you get it, but then you will probably have to pay the return costs.

If they've not yet sent it out, they must give you a full refund of the payment without any deductions.
If you contact them and ask about cancelling, they may well offer to refund you the £30 difference.

In this instance I don't think this is a fair comparison as the advert that the OP saw was clearly misleading as it stated that the price would be increasing the following day where as it was actually lowered.

Also it's quite possible that they mistakenly reduced the price instead of increasing. So you wouldn't be guaranteed to get the TV at the new lower price. Up to you if you want to risk it.
One important thing to remember is that when you get to the end of this sentence, you'll realise it's just my sig.

Normally if you buy something and then the price goes down then it just is bad luck. However in this case it looks like the trader could have been acting unlawfully under the Consumer protection from Unfair Trading Regulations, which prohibit "falsely stating that a product will only be available for a very limited time, or that it will only be available on particular terms for a very limited time, in order to elicit an immediate decision and deprive consumers of sufficient opportunity or time to make an informed choice".

Of course, as others have pointed out it could also have been a mistake on the part of the retailer, so the first point of call would be to contact them and query it (and ask if they'll knock the extra off for you)

I agree with this (I can't understand people ragging the OP for being disappointed), but would add that it might be an idea to contact them, anonymously or using a pseudonym and get them to verbally confirm the price, before taking anything further.
The greater danger, for most of us, lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low and achieving our mark
