    Hiya,

I've been considering opening a Barclays basic 'Cash Card account'.

    Is it any good?

Which debit card do the offer?

    Online banking?

    Many Thanks,

    Sim.

    Hi Sim,

It works well for me. I have both internet and mobile banking (which is an absolute godsend to me as Im out and about a lot) I like the internet banking, its nice and easy to navigate. Only problem is it can be a bit slow to update.. Faster Payments are good too - they go instantly even on first payment unlike Santander who seem to send them when they can be bothered
It comes with what they call a Connect Electronic Visa Debit although bizarrely mine works in places it shouldnt (I've used it on a train before now) I have all my usual DD's/SO's and you can use any cashpoint machine plus the post office to withdraw cash. I like it much better than my full Santander account :rotfl:

    Hi Mrs_Ryan,

    It sounds just the job!

I'll get down to Barclays later in the week.

    Many Thanks,

    Sim.

I opened a Barclays CashCard Account a few days ago, which was accepted, but after reading posts on this forum, i'm scared I won't get a "normal" debit card! Some say, it is recognized as an electron (which would prevent me from doing my shopping at Tesco online for instance), others say it is a normal debit card with full auth!

Hard to know the truth! @Mrs_Ryan for instance, you say your Barclays CashCard shouldn't work on a train? Is it because it is an electron card and not a normal debit card?

    Other people using this card?

    1. My question is: what sort of things you cannot do with this card that you can do with other debit cards please?
    2. Other question, is the design of the card the same as the Barclays full current account debit card (plain blue)?

    thnx

hate-banks, I assure you, it works with Tesco online. I used mine to pay for our online shop a few weeks ago when OH lost his offline Santander debit card and it worked absolutely fine - went through with no problem, shopping was delivered and card was debited fine. (and I have used it before with no problem - in fact, for some bizarre reason, Tesco's system likes my card better than OH's Santander one :p)
It looks exactly the same as the 'full' Barclays debit cards (OH has just opened an account with Barclays, he has a full account with contactless debit card and the only difference between his and mine is that his has the little white contactless symbol in the corner and mine doesnt..) It is embossed and doesnt have 'electronic use only' stamped in the corner like some cards do..

With an 'online' card you arent supposed to be able to use them where there is no online connection to authorise them, for example on a train or a plane. I purchased a ticket on board a train and my online A&L card wouldnt work as it couldnt authorise it but my Barclays card worked - I have no idea why. Its not an Electron but my A&L card was one of the first online Visa Debit cards and that basically used to be absolutely terrible - couldnt use it to book hotels etc but I have never once had problems with my Barclays card.

Great news, thannks so much for this usefull info.
  • One tip, make sure you select Visa Debit/Delta or if that is not displayed just select Visa and this also is the same for Co-Op Visa Debit Cards.
