Hertz - driving licence question

I've just booked a car online as part of a Ryanair booking to Southern Ireland, and on the confirmation details I see it says :
"UK Photocard driving licences - paper counterpart also required at pick-up."
Not sure what this means. My husband, who will be the driver, only has an old style licence. Won't his passport plus his non-photo licence be adequate for ID?

I read this as if you have a photocard license, you need the counterpart in addition to the photocard itself...if you have a paper license, you can't produce both parts as there aren't two parts to the paper license.Does remembering a time that a certain degree of personal responsibility was more or less standard means that I am officially old?0 -
Paper licences are fine with all car hire, mine was issued in 1978 and has been accepted by everyone without a problem0
