I am amazed that I have managed to complete most of this - and its thanks to Clear's idiot proof instructions.

Just a few hiccoughs....

The startuplite wants to disable TkBellExe, TOSCDSPD, and smoothview, however, for each I get the message "Error on value: There was an error creating MSConfig key."


Uninstall any IE toolbars (browser helper objects or BHO's) in Control panel, or Firefox plugins that you don't need. This is a list of the IE BHO's evident in the log, (firefox plugins don't show up in hijackthis)

I can't find any of these - just one called 'Windows Live Sign-in Assistant' Will that be it?

You ask how it is slow. All I know is that it took forever to start - I would turn it on then make a coffee and could still be waiting. It was terribly slow at shutting down too. I have to say that it is improved now. The memory shows Vista C 14.9 GB free of 55.8 GB and Data E 49.7 GB free of 54.5 GB I don't know if this makes any difference?

free space doesn't make any difference

you can leave the windowslivelogin,

the other 2 file missings/no files can be ticked and fixed with hijackthis, but can be left as they wont affect speed.

startuplite, was that error after a reboot?

The startuplite was every time I try it - I get the same three with the same message for each one so before and after rebooting.

By using Avast, am I safe without Rapport and defender please?

nothing is 100% safe, use it alongside the free version of malwarebytes and do manual malwarebytes scans occasionally, and don't click on fake antivirus banners.

The other 2 will slow your machine down with little added benefit
