Thank you to closed for 'How to speed up a slow PC'.
I am in need of someone with a LOT of patience to guide me through it.
Step 1.
I have found windows task manager but what is the 'commit total charge'? I don't see anything called that.... I see that someone else posted a picture of the graph thingy but I don't know how to do this.
I have downloaded hijack this and tried to scan (eventually). How do I post the long list that has been generated please?
OK, by now you will see that I have very little techie knowledge. If you think that I should give up now I shall understand......

If it's vista/W7 you may need to download process explorer to get the commit charge
you would copy and paste the log into a thread - mse blocks web addresses for new users to stop spamming, so if it doesn't appear to paste into the thread, edit out all the www's first!!
> . !!!! ----> .0 -
Yes, it is Vista. Where do I find process explorer please?
I cannot copy and paste, it will only let me highlight one line at a time.0 -
follow the last paragraph of part one of the guide to post the log.
how much ram is installed, commit charge is less of a problem on newer machines!!
> . !!!! ----> .0 -
I am sorry (I did warn you you'd need patience) I have looked at your instruction guide but cant find anything about how to copy and paste it.
BTW, I did manage the ccleaner and the malawarebytes so that bit is done.0 -
run hijackthis
scan
save log
this should open the log in notepad
ctrl A
ctrl C
then ctrl v to paste in this thread
(if you have a problem running hijackthis on vista/W7, right click on hijackthis.exe and run as admin, if that doesn't work, try again holding down the shift key and run as admin)
if you have problems posting the log, remove all the www's in notepad first as mse blocks web addresses for new users

Installed physical memory 2GB - I think that's the RAM

> . !!!! ----> .0 -
OK - managed it> rapport uninstalled, thanks.0

how is it slow?
Disable (vista/W7) Windows Defender. To disable windows defender on vista or windows 7 - from the start menu, windows defender, tools, options, untick use real-time protection, under administrator options, untick use windows defender and untick allow everyone to use windows defender, click save to save settings.
Unless you need them running all the time, use the startup tab in msconfig to disable these items from running at startup (they can always be run manually if needed)

Unless you use media sharing across the network, disable it in media player, library, media sharing, or options media sharing, untick find and share media
If you haven't all ready done it, Install Malwarebytes and do a FULL (not quick) scan (after updating it), fix anything found before closing, otherwise you'll have to do it all over again. If anything was found reboot the machine before continuing. http://www.filehippo.com/download_malwarebytes_anti_malware/
Install and run ccleaner (untick the google toolbar during the install). Untick the "windows log files" box, under the system heading before cleaning. Also Tick the java cache tick box under CCleaner, applications, internet to wipe the java cache which sometimes hides infections. http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/download/slim
Install and run startuplite, accept suggested changes - http://www.malwarebytes.org/StartUpLite.exe
