I don't think you could make it for 10p, considering the paper has to be a certain quality to be able to fold over and over again without ripping. Go on, go for it, recreate it for 10p I'll love to see it! It includes: Textured ivory card on the bottom, textured ivory card inside which will have the message printed on it in metallic green ink, ivory ribbon through loop holes hidden inside the folds, mulberry paper of 110gsm to ensure the folds are strong enough to not rip and pearl hearts oh and a handmade envelope made from mulberry paper. Have a go and see how far 10p gets you.

You asked opinions so i told you mine, i could easily find a paper and recreate something that looks the same for 10p! Sure the paper may not be as good quality but it would easily withstand folding. I have been crafting for years, i have also made a few orders for various weddings so i know what most peoples budgets would be. If this woman is willing to pay you £3 then thats fab, but dont post on here if you dont want a truthful answer. We all will have a diff view on this

  • I wouldn't pay more than £1 to be honest. But then they're not really to my taste. And £3 each is an awful lot of money to spend on wedding invitations in my opinion - and I'm no mse. But if she's happy to pay for it, then she's happy to pay for it! If she's not, then I hope you didn't buy all the materials in one go... And if you didn't buy all the materials in one go then wouldn't that have made the materials more expensive in any event?

Perhaps it would have been an idea to ask her how much she wanted to spend on the invitations before you made one. That way you could have bought the materials accordingly and had clear profit margins.

I don't think you could make something that looks the same for 10p, but you certainly could make something that looks similar. However, there's almost always a distinct difference between something cheap and something of quality. Nothing personal but for arguments sake, it would be very interesting to see someone create something as close to the original as possible with the least amount of money, and 10p is nearly nothing. Also, you do have to account for the time spent making these and with 10p, surely you would only cover the costs?
But, we shall see what happens with this. Waiting with interest for the customers feedback on price.

You really need to consider how much you're willing to work for.
If you sell for £3.50 and they cost £1.60 each to make, that's £1.90 profit for each card. And, if they take half an hour each to make, that means you're working for £3.80 an hour. That also doesn't include other work you have done such as sourcing materials.
Now considering national minimum wage is £5.93 for 21 year olds, are you happy to earn almost 40% less than that for what is (what I believe) a fairly skilled job?

I would pay it. And with the 'average' wedding costing between £10-15,000, £300 for handmade invites doesn't seem too much. I wish you all the very best- I have set up my own business before and know how difficult it is to make sure you charge the right price.

Personally, when I got married, I didn't want something popping through the door that cost 10p- at that time, it was the biggest day of my life and I wanted something special.

I agree with the working out your hourly rate; eventually, I came to that conclusion and it worked quite well.

Thank you everyone for your opinions.

Don't worry I didn't buy all materials at once and because I didn't buy in bulk the sample cost more to make than the invitations would cost per piece if I did make all 80 and so the price i quoted her was for all 80, I did my research first to find out how much it would cost.

I posted the sample off to her yesterday and now I shall await her response. From what I can understand she obviously wants something very different which will create a bit of conversation, she had her heart set on a card of this style and so she will be willing to pay for it if it is what she really wants. If it's not what she wants then it saves me hours of work so either way I won't be hard done by.

I will let you know her response and how we get on with it. At the moment I think the only thing she will have a problem with is the colour as it's not quite the right shade of green...

You can't even buy a piece of card for 10p let alone the embellishments, ribbon etc etc so I'm sorry but you cannot make it for 10p (It is a 12x12 piece of card to begin with...) But it's okay I'm not looking for an argument I'm just extremely amused that if you are a crafter that you can be so rude to a fellow crafter. I have listened to everyone else's opinions seriously though and thank you for your input I have found it very useful :) x

and the diff view most people have is, you cannot create this for 10p

but as already asked, we would like to see you create this for 10p, and until such time as you can prove to the OP this is possible, your input is not of any great help

when you say you know what most peoples budgets are, which most of you referring to, to prove your point? the average spend on wedding stationery in the UK is about 3% of the budget - so £150 for each £5k spent on the wedding

They won't be hand written, they will be printed on my printer.

yes an in-house printer. I have sent the sample off to the bride to be today along with information. I have said if she wants the invitation to have printed and leave a blank for her to add the guests names herself then it's £3.50 and for her to have me add the guest names (so it's all printed and no hand writing involved) it's £3.75. The card at the moment is sitting in an envelope waiting to be posted. Do we think this is reasonable? :S

As my printer is always going wrong, I'm wondering if you have a back up plan in case there is a problem with yours at the crucial time you have to do her invitations?

Trust me you can buy a piece of card for 10p, im not the only one who said i wouldnt pay so much for your card- so why take an attitude. I never once said it wasnt nice, so dont call me rude- your rude for asking for opinions then taking offence because you dont like what i say! As for card prices, you should really shop around as i can get packs of the glitter stuff for 59p, same with the holographic stuff from home bargains. YES, i am aware this isnt the card you are using, but i can buy a piece of card for less then 10p.

Also, this forum is solely based on saving money, so you are bound to find plenty of people reading this would look at ways to save money making the invite, hence the title MONEY SAVING EXPERT!
