OK.Decided to do an install to 'C' drive and suffer the consequences after the cd repair failed a third time. The proces got to around 38% and I then got a message telling me that it cannot copy the file 'setupdll.DLL' & gives me the option to continue without it, warning that Windows may not operate correctly.I don't think I have any option here.Any thoughts?

Perhaps your Windows XP disc is kaput! Check your PM inbox for more info.

    Superb Stilltheone.

    Problem now sorted.

THAT was doing my head in because it's been a couple of years since I did that and I wasn't sure if I'd done something wrong. Phew. Thx.

    Couple of q's.

Will this version update OK as there used to be a problem in the past with non-official versions of XP.

Also, will this version ONLY install on a Dell (which my main PC is) because I have a hybrid with a crippled version of XP installed.

    :)

It is not a non-official XP disc, it is a Windows XP Professional with Service Pack 3 for DELL OEM disc. That is why it works with your DELL machine and will continue to work as normal.

If you want to use it with another brand or unbranded machine, you will need a licence.

I'm not sure why you were asking "anyone" for the answer, as they had no idea of what disc that you had in your possession.

Have you taken leave of your senses?

I always undersstood that under the licence agreement, I was able to use the Op Sys on up to TWO computers as long as they were in the same household.
Have you taken leave of your senses?

I had absolutely NO IDEA that there were Dell specific versions of XP so please excuse me for my ignorance.

Understand that If I knew as much as you then I wouldn't need to come on here asking for help.

    Sorry I bothered you!

    Perhaps you missed the point..

Firstly why are you asking "anyone" about what you call a "non official version of Windows"? How on earth would they know as to which disc you are referring?

Secondly, if as you alluded, that it was some kind of pirate version of Windows, why on earth are you asking questions about it on the open forum??

If someone sends you a PM, do you reply to them via the open forum??

This is why I asked you as to whether you had taken leave of your senses.

    Sheesh...

Anyway, in answer to your other statements...
Your original DELL disc(the one that came with your machine) is...just for DELL, so why would you not know that there are discs just for DELL machines?

If you felt that the licence allowed you to install on two machines, then why didn't you try to install your original DELL disc on your 'hybrid PC' with the 'crippled disc?

Thirdly, I didn't give you a licence at all. You already have a licence/COA with your DELL, I just supplied you with the relevant disc.

I don't have any problems with your lack of knowledge, but I do have a problem with your lack of common sense when it comes to Private Messages. I hope that you get it now.

You should be reminded that Private Messages are just that.

The insinuation on the open board that I supplied your with a pirate disc is like a smack in the face. Thank you.

    Thank you for that explanation.

I shant make excuses but I didn't realise that file was one that YOU provided me with as opposed to pointing out where it could be D/L'd from. My mistake.

I see the point about the PM that should have been and I do appologise for any inference that you had sent me anything but a copy of a legit file.

Anyway, I shall think before acting next time and once again thanks for your help.

Its a pity that I upset you.

I'm not upset any more. Thank you for the apology.

Anyway, on to your other machine. Is it working fully, apart from the Windows XP problem?

If so, I've sent you a diagnostic tool via PM.

It's a pretty old machine (Came in useful during my down time tho), not much memory and therefore pretty slow.

A genuine copy of XP Pro but the disk wasn't supplied as it was lost when my brother moved home.

Somewhere along the line XP got corrupted and I have no means of re-installing XP.

Big problem is that it won't upgrade therefore is a bit poor on security and therefore certain 'more modern' offerings won't run on it.

I call this a Hybrid as it is (Was) a very high spec gaming machine (It has no less than FIVE fans as well as the 2x circuit board coolers).

What info will you need from me using the Diagnostic tool?

Will Belarc not give the info needed as my firewall doesn't like OEMBIOS.exe.

No, it won't. Turn your Firewall off as you don't need to be connected to the Internet anyway.
AGAIN, do not mix discussions made via PM with ones on the open board. Is there something wrong with you?

From now on, keep it all via PM, as you don't seem able to help yourself.
