Looks like something has REALLY corrupted the ol PC this time.Op sys is corrupted but I THINK that the HD is working ok.Problem is that the recovery disk isn't working as I expected. It is a Dell e520 2006 build with 250gb HD.When I run the CD it gets as far as installing Windos (having run thru all the checks) and then fails. What happened to the 'Repair Windows' option or the option to reinstall windows? It just tries to run windows from the disc. Have I lost the right disc or something? I am using the 'Reinstalation' Disc as suppled. That is correct isn't it?After it tries to install I get an Unknown Hard Error.System Root/System 32/NTDLL.DLL error.Any thoughts?

ah yes.Its XP.I was wondering if the problem is that I have upgraded to SP3 and that the repair disc isn't.Just a thought."Unhappiness is not knowing what we want, and killing ourselves to get it."Post Count: 4,111 Thanked 3,111 Times in 1,111 Posts (Actual figures as they once were))Women and cats will do as they please, and men and dogs should relax and get used to the idea.0

When I run the CD I get the folowing at bottom of page 'setup is loading files'
Once all the files/drivers Etc are loaded I then get 'setup is starting windows', then 'Unknown Hard Error.System Root/System 32/NTDLL.DLL' error
No other options appear during this time and that is booting the system completely from cold."Unhappiness is not knowing what we want, and killing ourselves to get it."Post Count: 4,111 Thanked 3,111 Times in 1,111 Posts (Actual figures as they once were))Women and cats will do as they please, and men and dogs should relax and get used to the idea.0 -

Can you not boot in to the Recovery Console and run ChkDsk or SFC from there?0

Hi,
I have attempted quite a few options and not sure if I tried that.
How do I get the Recovery Console up?
After a load more tries it looks like I can get into the repair mode now (Changed the CD drive as well).
Tried a repair and it cant find the recovery console.
Looks like a clean install is now imminent.
I have a 250Gb drive partitioned into about 6 sections. If I install onto 'C' drive (Approx 50Gb) then it will probably render most programs unusable I expect. Would it be wise to install to a smaller drive for now?
Would it automaticlly boot from the smaller drive without problems or am I best off putting the Op Sys on 'C' drive and recover what progs/files I can?"Unhappiness is not knowing what we want, and killing ourselves to get it."Post Count: 4,111 Thanked 3,111 Times in 1,111 Posts (Actual figures as they once were))Women and cats will do as they please, and men and dogs should relax and get used to the idea.0 -

To which smaller drive are you referring? The hidden recovery partition? Which is currently the active partition?
I included a link in my earlier post with instruction on how to boot into Recovery Console.0 -
Ah. that. But I already in post#5 That the CD wouldn't give me that option or when it did it failed. There are nohidden partitions on my drive - they are all used.'C' drive is the partition that has always contained the Windows Op Sys and all of the other partitions contain various progs or files (Photos, Word, Movies etc.)"Unhappiness is not knowing what we want, and killing ourselves to get it."Post Count: 4,111 Thanked 3,111 Times in 1,111 Posts (Actual figures as they once were))Women and cats will do as they please, and men and dogs should relax and get used to the idea.0

OK.Decided to do an install to 'C' drive and suffer the consequences after the cd repair failed a third time. The proces got to around 38% and I then got a message telling me that it cannot copy the file 'setupdll.DLL' & gives me the option to continue without it, warning that Windows may not operate correctly.I don't think I have any option here.Any thoughts?"Unhappiness is not knowing what we want, and killing ourselves to get it."Post Count: 4,111 Thanked 3,111 Times in 1,111 Posts (Actual figures as they once were))Women and cats will do as they please, and men and dogs should relax and get used to the idea.0
