    Well, I suppose that if you had a 20X machine and an 18X machine and a 16X machine all running flat out to burn the same size of file.....

    If the 20X machine did the job in 3 minutes then the 16X machine would take 3 minutes and 45 seconds and the 18X machine somewhere in between.
    :cool:

    edit: In theory :-)

    Ok
    16x is 21,640 KB/second
    18x is 24,345 KB/second
    20x is 27,050 KB/second

    1GB burning time then would be
    16x = 12 hours 50 mins :eek:
    18x = 11 hours 24 mins :eek:
    20x = 10 hours 16 mins :eek:

    Are these workings correct? And a large dvd would be 4.7 GB :eek: :eek: :eek: How do people do it?

    EDIT: No these can't be correct, I have just seen other frums talking about people burning in 6 - 25 mins so where did I go wrong?

    Wig

    1GB = 1,000,000KB (approx)
    so 4.7GB = 4,700,000KB

    4,700,000 divided by 21,640 = 217.19 seconds
    4,700,000 divided by 24,345 = 193.05 seconds
    4,700,000 divided by 27,050 = 173.75 seconds

    So the times are 3min 37sec, 3min 13sec, 2min 53sec.

    ok
    16x is 21,640 KB/second = 22159360 Bytes
    18x is 24,345 KB/second = 24929280 Bytes
    20x is 27,050 KB/second = 27299200 Bytes

    1GB (1,073,741,824) burning time then would be
    16x = 48 secs
    18x = 43 secs
    20x = 39 secs

    4.7 GB = respectively
    3 min 45 secs
    3 min 22 secs
    3 min 3 secs

    Which is now too fast so I still don't trust these new figures. but they are better than before. And there is the problem of knowing whether drive storage/speed is measured in base 2 or base 10 (1024 or 1000)

    These are theoretical figures Wig.
    In real life it will take longer.
    But it looks like the time difference between 16X and 20X machines when burning a whole DVD is less that a minute.

    have you seen the price of lightscribe disks?:eek:

    Lightscribe is rather a cunning idea, but my understanding is that it's agonisingly slow - around 30 mins for a label.

    Base 10 - not much different from base 2, slightly faster though.

    16x is 21,640 KB/second = 21,640,000 Bytes
    18x is 24,345 KB/second = 24,345,000 Bytes
    20x is 27,050 KB/second = 27,050,000 Bytes

    1GB (1,000,000,000 bytes) burning time then would be
    16x = 46 secs
    18x = 41 secs
    20x = 37 secs

    4.7GB
    3 min 37 secs
    3 min 12 secs
    2 min 54 secs

    Your understanding is correct, to a certain extent. According to the LightScribe FAQ:
    Q: How long does it take to label a disc?

    A: Labeling time depends heavily on content, hardware, media and print mode used. Typically for title only content, a labeling time of 2-5 minutes can be expected. For full disc graphics in Best quality mode, labeling times of 20-35 minutes can be expected.
    The results of the latter option look something like this.

    OK thanks. I suspect most folks wouldn't want to go to that much trouble!
