Bread sauce - WHY?

2

Comments

  • I can only agree with everybody else. Bread sauce is the essential component of our Christmas dinner. My husbands family always used to make it from a packet!
His parents came over last year and had mine ( homemade) for the very first time and said it was the best dinner they had ever had.

Long live family traditions.....Homemade of course!

Thank You everyone. I am so glad I asked the question. It is wierd how I have never heard of it before. Could it be a regional thing? I learnt from my Mum who learnt from her Mum and they are from East Anglia.

It has been lovely to hear about everyone's idea of a perfect Christmas lunch but I don't think I will be trying it any time soon. :p

I love bread sauce, but only the packet stuff! Which is odd as I make most of our stuff from scratch!

Never hear of bread sauce on fish though?

I also do Bread Sauce with Turkey/Chicken, if I dont there are quite a few moans! I follow my own recipe which is:

Dice 1 onion add S&P and water and microwave(in a bowl) till soft, strain the onion into a jug, mash the cooked onion, soak bread in milk till soft, add the mashed onion and mix altogether, if still a bit dry add some onion water, use any remaining onion juice to gravy stock water.

I also do Onion Sauce for lamb, a basic white sauce and then add diced cooked onion to it.

We've never had bread sauce with our Xmas lunch, however it is traditional in DH's family to do a huge pan of mushy peas - that coupled with sprouts can make for a pretty rancid and funny afternoon/evening

Mushy peas AND sprouts? Now that's asking for trouble. Do they have a dog they can blame? :rotfl:

Apart from the year my Dad ended up with a scalding hot dollop of it all over his hand :rotfl: LOL :rotfl: I don't think he spoke to my Mum til New Year!! It still gets mentioned now (to much hilarity) and he still gets in a huff about it :D LOL. Sorry, maybe you had to be there!

Is bread sauce a northern thing? We always had it with chicken/turkey, but my southern hubby had never had it til he came to Sunday lunch at my Mum's.

It could very well be  My best friend who lives in Crawley had never heard of it until I mentioned it this year.
