Interesting days out within reach of London

Options
Hubby has 2wks leave starting today although we aren't going away (very old frail kitty) we want some days out come rain or shine, having lived in London forever we've done most of the things to do here and want some days out within reach of home , we live West London near the A40 10mins from M25 so has anyone some suggestions for places to visit , we plan on going to the coast probably Littlehampton and a visit to Oxford but would welcome any other suggestions of places of interest. We really enjoyed Rye so much to see and Portsmouth Royal Dockyard.

Places within an hour or two at most would be good.. and if they are cheap or free even better , we have Freedom passes so could use Park and Ride in a lot of places.. We went to Wisley last year which we enjoyed also maybe small Museums in interesting towns.. I've looked online but end up with so much I can't sort the wood from the trees... and thought personal recommendation would be better.. thanks anyway

Not sure how far it is for you but you could try:
-Fairford Air Tatoo which is 16/17 July. Good day out if you into boys toys and lots of noise.
-If you like that sort of thing you could look at the Red Arrows display program, if you choose the right venue it can be free apart from getting there. Have seen them at various seaside venues but check the weather before you go they will cancel if it is cloudy.

If you enjoyed Wisley, there's Winkworth Arboretum not too far away. (sorry, couldn't resist ...)

For a 'hang the expense' day, you might enjoy Legoland. Honest!

What about Bletchley near Milton Keynes or The ShuttleswortCollection near Biggleswade (off the A1). I haven't been to either yet but have been told that both are excellent days out.

Worthing International Birdman competition - people try to fly off worthing pier in August.
Eastbourne airshow in August - went to this a couple of years ago with the grandchildren and everyone had a great time - red arrows over the sea and land, plus a fair, etc.
check out if and when Brighton is having its festival.
If you like Rye, you might also like Canterbury - old town, cathedral, etc.
Yesterday's Guardian Money section had a section on free activities during the summer, if you can get hold of a copy.

In fact, just noticed that if you google guardian money, the feature comes up on the front page.

I used to occasionally have a great day out sitting in any of Londons Large railways staions and watching the weirdo's.
