Staying in a hotel - Family of 5 with young kids.

  • I have recently discovered Youth Hostels and think they are great for families. Some have family rooms for up to 6 people and you can self cater or eat in their dining room. Self catering is a lot cheaper. At them moment there is an offer on YHA's, if you book a family room before the end of June it costs £29.99 for the room per night! If you go to the YHA website and look at the summer sizzlers offer you can see the list of YHAs taking part in this. The YHA's often have games like monopoly etc that you can borrow and play in the evening. Some have bars. I have found them very friendly, cheap and convenient.

Just to say, there is a website called Roomfor5 - I found it and it was great as I found a hotel we needed so that we could all stay in one room - Me & OH, two boys under 5 & 9 month old daughter. :)

Premier Inn family rooms allow up to five, consisting of two adults and three children, providing the youngest is under two and can sleep in a cot....

    from their T&Cs...

"Family rooms offer accommodation for two adults and up to two children aged 15 and under (and a child under 2 years in a cot), or a maximum of 2 adults."

It's usually when youngest gets to 2nd birthday that you get a problem. I'd 'forget' when the 2yo's date of birth was and make it that they are slightly younger. ;)

It's not usually age that is the problem at hotels, not for youngsters.

It is simply bed availability, fire certificates and small rooms which dont sleep five!

There are hotels with family rooms for 5

However the TRavelodge plan sounds the cheapest.

They usually sleep 5 when the youngest is less than 2 years old! In this case the OP talks about having a 2 yo, had they got a 23 month old it wouldn't be an issue.

Thanks everyone for the tips, it sounds like we probably could get away with all staying in 1 room but going in seperately, I would just dread the moment where they might not let us stay. We recently got back from staying in a lodge meant for 8 and there were 9 of us there including my 2 year old. We took an airbed but it was so laid back we only saw 1 member of staff the whole time we were there.

The rooms for 5 website is a good find, thanks for that !

    not necessarily.

I work in hotel management, have done for years. Some rooms do not have enough room for a cot, I was simply pointing out age is not the restriction for most hotels, it is down to space. They may also have a limited no of extra beds and cots for rooms as well. Not all hotels are like Premier Inn and purpose built.

I too have asked, & been provided with a cot in Travelodges & Holiday inn chains. Other than that I've tried the room for 5 website. Or I look for apart(ment)hotels, where we can get a flat within the hotel complex.

My youngest is now just over 2, but is little, and still sleeps in a cot. I forget her exact age. When she hits five I may have to reconsider :D
