SailRail is often quite good value, if you also need land transport either or both ways.0

The most expensive times to use the ferries are Christmas, Easter & Summer. Fuel is expensive and I would guess that that is the reason for the surcharge, you are also taking animals and that costs as well. I'm also going to Ireland soon and would usually take my car but the ferry price is just not competetive enough.
