There is valid and robust scientific evidence linking saturated fat intake with coronary heart disease.
    http://www2.cochrane.org/reviews/en/ab002137.html

There are clear correlations found in many studies between saturated fat intake and high LDL serum cholesterol levels.

This is often misinterpreted to mean that "low fat" is healthy. There is no evidence that a "low fat" diet is good either for reducing obesity or for reducing coronary heart disease. Approx a third of calories should come from fats - preferably unsaturated and including essential fatty acids such as omega 3.

UK dietary recommendations are not based on research carried out by Ancel Keys but on many different scientific studies. Some 92 studies into the effects of dietary fat on health were investigated when setting the recommendation for dietary fat in the UK.

Interestingly Ancel Keys actually recommended the Mediterranean diet (not a low fat diet but a low saturated fat diet) which has been shown to have many dietary benefits. His data has been widely misinterpreted (and was incorrectly used to justify some of the low fat hype in the 80s).

The link between saturated fat and cancer is less clear but some studies have shown a link between saturated fat intake and cancers of the breast and bladder. I did not say that red meat causes cancer! :)

typical mish mash report, no doubt like all the others when its looked at properly it can be pulled apart for the holes these types of studies generally can, and even if it is straight the results difference in this one are tiny

if i get time ill check to see if this is one of the studies that Taubes has pulled to pieces

This isn't a mish mash report - this is a Cochrane systematic review of available data! A systematic review is one of the least flawed scientific methodologies. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cochrane_Library

BTW Taubes is a physicist - clearly a scientist and I would not presume to dispute his understanding of scientific data but he is not qualified in nutritional science nor biochemistry.

OP you do seem to eat a lot of fruit now, but just remember fruit isn't zero calories. Bananas especially can be more than a chocolate bar if you got a big one! You could be consuming hundreds of calories in fruit - apples, grapes, strawberries.etc Then you have an 850 calorie meal which is a big meal.

Also breakfast as they say, is the most important meal of the day, most of us, including me sometimes, neglect breakfast. Have a yoghurt or piece of fruit in the morning if you're in a rush. But doing a physical job should mean you should eat a larger breakfast. I work at a desk so can have breakfast at my desk if I miss it, but by the sounds of your job that will be tricky to do.

I'm with you in the fact I need to lose weight (overweight bodering on the obese!! Eek) People like us just need to get a push. I know all the facts just don't have the willpower! My big push is all about trying to exercise, being short I need a lot less calories to maintain a healthy weight than most people. OP out of curiosity how tall are you? Because short people like me don't need as many calories, which makes portion sizes more of a pain.

My low-fat diet must have been a fluke then, I've lost 7 stone in 11 months following it......

    Hi Sharon,
Yeah I eat a fair bit of fruit, but because most of its been quite expensive I've been avoiding buying some of it, but today we've been shopping, and i've bought some salad stuff, some chicken to put in with the salad, a mixture of fruit so I'll eat less fruit but a better variety got some basic cereal for some morning, along with a piece or two of toast, I've also got my hands on some seafood too to have with some salad or indeed on its own, my M-i-law was cracking up as we took twice as long to do the shopping because I was checking everything, even the oh was moaning about how long I was taking.
I've been trying to take in all the helpful hints that people have been writing since I posted the other day, which has been quite alot and very much appreciated.
I'm looking at increasing my protein levels in the morning and more than I would normally have at lunch, but cut down at dinner, have already pretty much planned the dinners for the week, got a steak for one night, pork steaks for twice, once with a vegetable stir fry, and another with a basic tomato sauce, have loads of veg too to bulk everything up.
My banana's aren't that big as I don't like to embarass the guys at work too much(lol).
I already get up at 5.30am but am going to try and get up a little earlier to allow me that extra ten minutes or so to have some breakfast, I do have time at work for a break but in the mornings are our busiest time running about like headless chickens, then it gets somewhat more chilled by the afternoon, we have a deadline to do our work every day, so we rush about to get it done, as the workload changes every day and we never know how much we're going into, throw in a couple of deliveries to unload off pallets and into our building, is the weight training, then I'm up and down the stairs at least 2/3 times a day, sometimes more, managing to get up them without needing oxygen at the top!
I'm sticking in and will do, just keep pushing for a little more understanding from the rest of the household!
Thanks to all the competition posters.

4lbs is a massive weight loss in one week. If you can do 1lb a week steadily that's the way to go. Don't rush it.
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

Hi GDB, it wasn't meant to lose so much weight in one week, i've been eating the same amount of food for the past few weeks(about 6/7 weeks) but this is the first week I have lost anything, well on my weigh day(today) anyway.
I've had alot of help and advice from many many people on this thread, so hopefully I can eat a little bit better than what I have been and not starving myself as many people say I have been, so fingers crossed there will be a steady run now, so we'll see what happens.
Thanks to all the competition posters.

Well dear i suggest you to eat small quantity food and don't skip any time meal.Avoid to eat oily food and fast food and try to eat fruits and vegetables. You should drink green tea regularly. You need to do some exercise. In my opinion running and walking are best exercises for you and with these exercises you can easily reduce your weight.
