Just rangmy insurance company (M&S) to quote me on a '51 Ford Focus 1.4 fully comp with an additional provisional driver and (my) 6 points (so exactly same as last year - but with an extra years NCB)
Last years price for fully comp £279.75
This years price £840.77
I know insurance has gone up but COME ON!!!!!!
Time to start hunting me thinks

Yep. Same thing happened to me last year, although not quite as much of a hike. They rely on people's inertia. Pretty stupid way of doing business IMO as customers do what I did and what you’re about to do, namely shop around and then walk, whereas if it went up by just a few 10s of pounds people would probably think ‘oh well’ and pay it. I wouldn’t be a bit surprised if the confused.coms of this world get you a better price as a new customer with your existing co than they're quoting you for a renewal!
But a word of warning – when you cancel, make damn sure you get clear and conclusive proof that you HAVE cancelled! I would suggest doing it by email and ensuring you get an acknowledgement AND, if you're paying monthly, cancel the direct debit with your bank.

Am just about to launch a civil claim against Halifax for this, once my remortgage gets sorted out – don’t want to jeopardize my credit history just yet.0 -

You didn't pick them up for no insurance did you?0 -
lol nooo
First 3 points are nearly due to come off - one winter, in a rush to get home, lights went amber, thought i'd make it and didnt
Second lot of points was last year - speeding on motorway (stupidly wasnt paying attention like i should of to my speedo)
All was on last years policy (obviously) so thats not why it was a price hike0 -

That's weird. Obviously premiums are a function of lots of things and not purely CCs eg a few years ago I had a 4.2 Toyota Landcruiser which wasn't that expensive to insure because although it was a big engine it wasn't that fast or likely to hit things / get nicked.
But a Golf R32 - bigger engine, more likely to hit things / get nicked, presumably higher s/h value and yet cheaper to insure than a 1.0 Nissan Micra or a 1.4 Ford Focus? That makes no sense at all, assuming the only difference between the quotes was the car and not the age/record of the driver, location etc?0 -

Jesus! By that rationale a Ferrari F40 fully comp for a 19 year old living in Tower Hamlets with a drink-driving conviction, no NCB and 3 at-fault accidents in the last 12 months should cost £89.17 a year.
Maybe a tenner more for the above driving an Impreza WRX
