NTL CABLE MODEM 250 - needs to be chipped??

Hi

I was looking at replacing my ntl cable modem and came across this one on ebay.

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/NTL-DSL-CABLE-MODEM-250_W0QQitemZ220060288803QQihZ012QQcategoryZ62025QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

I dont understand what the seller means when he says:

"These modems have not been chipped and can only be activated by a knowledgeable person"

What does this mean? I've always associated chipping with someting illegal!

Can I use this modem with my connection or should I steer clear??

Cheers

    Hi kaaloo

Is your present NTL cable modem faulty?

Why don't you Ask seller a question

  • Yes, NTL boxes can be chipped so that you recieve all the channels including Pay per View for free. It is highly illegal so I would stay away from anyone selling one, however, you quote that this box has not been chipped so it should be ok to buy.

Apparently, there is a way of viewing freeview channels o your PC using a TV card and the NTL signal which is ok to do as its free anyway. Never got round to trying it myself.

As Bat999 said, why do you want to replace your cable modem? If it's faulty then call ntl and they'll replace it.

What the seller means by their comment is that you will not be able to swap out your current cable modem for that one without knowing someone within ntl that can activate your cable modem for you as the systems won't recognise the modem.

Steer well clear of any auctions like this as they are a waste of money.

Clicked on Thanks instead of reply.

Why on earth would you buy an NTL modem when NTL supply it free? You used to have the option of buying your own modem and paying £5 less each month. That option has now stopped and the modem is included in the monthly fee for broadband.

    Steer clear of this.

It's a cable modem for broadband not a set top box.

The main problem is that the mac address of any modem has to be registered with NTL. They will want to know where/why he got a new one. No modem will work until that has been done.

    Is his faulty?
