Mattress topper that allows returns?

I've moved in for the summer with my boyfriend and we're sharing a bed, but I'm having real problems with his mattress. Previously I've put up with it on short stays, but I can't just ignore it for the next four months! It's only a couple of years old but very hard, and it seems to be exacerbating the joint pain I get. He's willing to get a memory foam mattress topper to see if that will help (we've put down a duvet already, but that isn't quite enough).
So, what I'm looking for is a place that sells memory foam mattress toppers - but they have to be willing to take the topper back if it doesn't seem to be helping after a couple of days. There's no point in us making a fairly expensive purchase if it doesn't actually make a difference to the bed...it'd be better if we could put the money towards separate mattresses if that's the case :P
Any ideas? I know for sure already that Dunelm won't refund any mattress toppers, for example.

QVC, genuine no quibble 30 day money back guarantee. No I don't work for them but have bought the odd thing!0

It looks like John Lewis online would accept it back.
But in all honesty, you shouldn't really use a mattress topper and then return it, hygiene reasons....yuk, I wouldn't want to sleep/buy a topper someone else has slept on, would you?

Thanks for the John Lewis bit. I don't really see it as a hygiene issue...after all, it's under a sheet. If I bought a sofa I'd be allowed to return it (as long as it wasn't custom-made), and I could sit on the sofa for 16 hours a day if I really wanted to, directly on the fabric.0

It is a hygiene issue.
I would never buy any type of mattress that somebody else had used.Try to be a rainbow in someone's cloud.0 -
Its absolutely a hygiene issue and cant think why you cannot see that. Go to Ikea and try some out - they have loads of mattress toppers. Actually I think you will find that the like of JL will only accept it back if its not been used in its original packaging!I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer.
Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over and through me. When it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
When the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.0 -
it will quite probably be cheaper to get a new mattress.... go check out the local bed shops and try their mattresses!LB moment 10/06 Debt Free date 6/6/14Hope to be debt free until the day I dieMortgage-free Wannabee (05/08/30)6/6/14 £72,454.65 (5.65% int.)08/12/2023 £33602.00 (4.81% int.)0

but you probably wouldn't have sex on the sofa... or drool on it or sweat on it or have your period on it which are all potential issues with a mattress!LB moment 10/06 Debt Free date 6/6/14Hope to be debt free until the day I dieMortgage-free Wannabee (05/08/30)6/6/14 £72,454.65 (5.65% int.)08/12/2023 £33602.00 (4.81% int.)0 -
You must never have used any of the major bed shops, then, given they say that they'll swap mattresses if you find they aren't comfortable.
I don't think it's unreasonable that if a £200 purchase doesn't work, I should be able to return it to a shop that is happy to accept returns. Given that there are places which are doing this, I don't think it's fair that almost all the responses I'm getting are "eeeewwww". Here's an example of one:

or another:

I'm not planning on bleeding on it or having sex on it. Heck, it'll probably take all of ten seconds of lying on it for me to know whether it's made the mattress softer or not...0 -
Well if you know that you can do this in these shops - why are you asking on here?
(Makes note to herself not to use these particular shops - I don't want a used mattress!)0 -
I thought someone here might be able to help me in saying which ones are any good. I guess I shouldn't have asked for help in a help forum. Thanks everyone, you've made me feel really awful and disgusting for asking a simple question.0
