Thanks everyone. Is there anything else that comes close to these that they might be confused for?

At this time of year, a shrub in what must be some kind of fruit garden - not really. But def. later in the year there are a number of red berries that you really wouldn't want to it - realistically most berries are poisonous

Blackcurrants, not just the fruit, but the whole plant has a noticeable Ribena smell about them - they can't be confused for/with anything else.

We were always taught that red is dead when we were younger. The only exception I know of is the redcurrants (obviously raspberries and strawberries too, those ones are obvious).

Gardenroute is right about the blackcurrant, try to catch it is full sun and the smell is wonderful, otherwise break a stem and it should smell strongly of ribena.

Actually the one you really have to look out for, is the black Deadly Nightshade, because that's about the only berry which is poisonous, which tastes sweet/ok, most of the others you would spit out.

Obviously alot of red ones are poisonous as well, including the seeds in yew berries, although the sweetish red flesh is ok to eat, but eat the seeds (in the berry) and you're in big trouble.

They look like fruit currants to me too.
We planted redcurrants a few years ago, we don't eat them but it does keep some of our garden birds happy and hopefully away from my strawbs :)

  • Update - I know this post is a little old now - but thought some of you might be interested.

Was tidying up the garden the other day and cam across a stonking great label that said it was a redcurrant plant!
Ah - if only every plant had a printed label on!
