Worst case scenario is that the charger doesn't put out enough current to actually charge your device faster than it drains it's own battery. I've had this issue with cheap chargers used when used with a Nokia N900 which likes to guzzle power.

The cheap chargers generally put out 0.5 amps, though there are some that put out more.

What is the stated current output of your existing charger?

In any case that ebay one is advertised as being compatible with your device, so if it can't charge it you have valid grounds to send it back and/or open a dispute with paypal, if you can be bothered.

Going by the piccy it's a car, ie, 12v dc charger, so not applicable

It's very applicable. It's a 12v DC ciggy lighter to mini/micro USB charger. It will be putting out 5v DC at an as yet unknown current, dependent on how good the dc-dc converter in the thing is.

For £3 I would have a go with the Ebay item first.

I have brought a few for mobile phones including HTC wildfire and otheritems which have done the job.

Quite a few USB chargers seem to have that.5amp limitation on output even ones attached to inverters

In my experience it has been enough to power the item if not fully charge them i.e. it will get to 4/5 bars but not 5/5.

the 0.5 amp limitation is because the official USB spec, which is from the late 90s, specifies a maximum of 0.5 amps on a USB controller so in theory devices should never draw even close to 0.5 amps.

This is largely ignored these days, especially for devices that charge over USB. I have one USB car charger that puts out 1.8 amps and I also have a phone that actually needs it, as if given a 0.5 amp supply and used for anything other than standby it will flatten it's battery even while charging.

As an aside, if anyone remembers the issues with that awful Alcatel USB ADSL modem from the late 90s, the one that looked like a squashed frog. That thing required 0.6 amps to function and Alcatel only ever tested it on a machine that was putting out more current than the spec called for. Anyone who had a PC that only put out the required 0.5 amps would find that modem to be unstable or simply not work at all. To fix it you'd need to get an external, powered, USB hub.

My charger has a 2 amp slow-blow fuse if that helps.

    It says:

    Input: 12/24v (800 ma)
    Output: 5V/1A

TOM TOM docking kit suggests typical operating current of 80ma (.08A?) and maximum operating current of 1.5A.

There you go then, just make sure whatever replacement you get can output at least 1A (it's ok to go higher) and you're sorted.

If you get that ebay one, since it explicitly states it works with your Navman, it should be fine. You can check the current output on the label just to be sure though.

I bought the ebay charger - when I plugged it in the light on the charger came on but the charging light on the satnav didn't come on and it didn't charge (ebay listing said it works with this satnav) so have arranged a return

A friend has a similar satnav (older model) which has been damaged so he said I should try his charger as it is no use to him now - tried it and it worked fine so I am keeping that one now

The ratings and plugs etc. are all the same so either the ebay one is faulty or there is some other reason for it not working

My friend also mentioned that the cigarette lighter in his car stopped working and the mechanic that replaced it said the damage was caused by inserting and removing sat nav chargers etc. - I have personally noticed that sometimes it can require quite a bit of force to get it in and out of the slot

Are there ways to avoid damage?

what if something like this was used - http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/NEW-12v-24v-Car-Double-Cigarette-Lighter-Adapter-/220764600538?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item33669878da so if it does get damaged the doubler gets damaged rather than the actual car part
