Sat Nav Charger damaged

navman-s70-3d-in-car-charger.jpg

the front metal 'tip' part of it that goes into the cigarette lighter is missing - can it be fixed/replaced or do I need to buy a whole new charger?

Some adaptors just house a fuse in the end, some have a metal tip that goes in before the fuse. I imagine it can be fixed if you can find the tip (the end screws off, revealing the fuse or at least the fuse compartment)

If the end that connects to the sat nav is a usb connector (Small size) you can get a cable from ebay for a couple of quid...

Yeah the newer TomToms are good in that they just have normal USB charge connectors, so any old charger will do.

The bit that screws off and whatever was inside seems to be gone - don't think I'll find it though

There's several different types of USB connector, yours is most likely one of the following:

    3ZFLh.jpg

    Left: Mini USB
    Right: Micro USB

It's also work checking how much current your charger puts out (should say on the label) and be sure to get a charger that puts out at least that much current.

The satnav has a mini and the phone has a micro!

looking on ebay there are actually some car chargers quite cheap i.e. this one is £3 http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/CAR-CHARGER-NAVMAN-S30-S50-S70-3D-S80-12V-24V-/180522066593?pt=UK_CE_GPS_Accessories_Software_ET&hash=item2a07f422a1

though the official navman one is £20 - http://ukstore.navmanstores.com/Accessories/Spirit%20Car%20Charger___585.htm

quite a big difference - should I try the ebay one?

Or buy a cheapo old mobile phone charger and switch the tip onto the old one.

I'd much rather fix the original charger than use a compatible charger. There is probably plenty sold on eBay. Micro and Mini USB cable ends are very common amongst Sat Navs and mobile phones. You don't want to use one that is not for it and outputs different power to your Sat Nav - as it may damage the battery or circuit board in the process.

Worst case scenario is that the charger doesn't put out enough current to actually charge your device faster than it drains it's own battery. I've had this issue with cheap chargers used when used with a Nokia N900 which likes to guzzle power.

The cheap chargers generally put out 0.5 amps, though there are some that put out more.

What is the stated current output of your existing charger?

In any case that ebay one is advertised as being compatible with your device, so if it can't charge it you have valid grounds to send it back and/or open a dispute with paypal, if you can be bothered.
