The MOT garage I use in SE London will collect and return cars. According to their website there is no need for the car to be insured, just that it doesn't have any dangerous defects.

still not sure what the legal position is though if garage go through a dvla car tax camera on the way to the garage
personally i use trade plates for everything as my plates are actually on the MID and as i said earlier the law is still not clear but i certainly dont want to be the one who makes the law if i end up in court

Probably for the best. The chap who does the MoT's on my cars got pulled up at a VOSA checkpoint while driving a customer's car to his garage for an MoT test. He didn't get prosecuted in the end... but it took him over six months to persuade them that he had done nothing wrong in the first place.
