I want to sell the car as I can no longer afford the running costs and I thought it might sell better if at least it had a years MOT on it. I have had a lot of work done on it so it should pass but I have no way of getting it to a garage0

See if you can get short term insurance on it say 1 day or 1 week.
Then you can drive it to the MOT station, but you have to drive straight there (as it isnt taxed) and straight back.
Mind, you wont be able to give anyone a test drive in it unless you tax it for 6 months (you could do this and either claim the tax back,
obviously you would lose a month) or add it to the asking pricemake the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.

theoretically if the mot garage had trade plates and fitted them to your vehicle then the car is covered
ive yet to see this clarified just like any car sorned on a car site and taken on a test drive with trade plates in though
nonone is willing to give a definative answer
the answer seems hope you dont get a jobsworth stopping you0 -
As others have suggested, insure your car (if you google you can probably find a few companies that can sell you short term cover), drive to the garage and get your MOT, then either drive straight to a DVLA office to get a tax disc or drive straight home. :j0

The MOT garage I use in SE London will collect and return cars. According to their website there is no need for the car to be insured, just that it doesn't have any dangerous defects.

On a rotating plate, with spikes like Flash Gordon
And you're Peter Duncan; I gave you fair warning0
