The only 2 safe ways, as have been already mentioned are :

    1. Cheque, but don't release the car until your bank confirms it's cleared. Understandably, buyer will probably be reluctant to do this.
    2. Hard cash paid in over the counter at your bank. The bank staff will then be able to spot any forged notes ( or if they don't that's their problem ! ), once you've got the paying-in receipt from the bank you're home and dry.

I don't see what difference it makes as to whose PC is used to send the money but there's no way on this Earth that I would log in to some stranger's PC to do electronic banking.

UUMMMM you ask a question then clearly answer it, if you wouldn't use someone elses PC to check online banking then clearly it does matter the difference. Incase you don't actually know, you wouldn't use someone elses pc/laptop in case they have a keylogger on it and then would be able to access your bank account online at a later time.
Everyones opinion is the most important.....no wonder nothing is ever agreed on.

Credit transfer is probably best and my favourite method for everyone's benefit, though cash paid in at bank with both parties present is fine too.

Remember a genuine buyer will be just as nervous as you and won't relish wandering the streets in strange areas with wads of cash bulging from his pockets.

It's easy to forget that honest folk are still the majority despite the criminals best attempts to outbreed us.

A cheque and bank credit can both be reversed even after they are shown as "cleared". If you are accepting them you need to ask your bank explicitly - when is the earliest point that I can be absolutely certain that these funds will not be reversed?

A bankers draft could be stolen or forged. Paypal can easily be reversed.

I sold a car for £6k in cash. Just check the notes carefully, double count it in front of the purchaser, then split it up into several places in the house and bank it in several trips (just in case the purchaser is shady and intends to burgle or mug you!).

I was questioning why property.advert was insisting that the buyer should only use the seller's PC to make the transfer.

The hint was in the bit that I quoted.

Cash for me, keeps it simple, if they are all brand new £50......also trust your instincts if they seem like baddies, they usually are...

Provided that you have waited 6 full working days from the cheque being deposited into your account then the money cannot be taken from your account if the cheque was to bounce. (the only exception to this is if can be proven that the recipient of the payment knowingly accepted a stolen or forged cheque).

Cash only and again avoid paypal, it costs you money and leaves you wide open to someone that just wants to "hire" a car for the weekend. :money::money::money:
I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.
