Hi, could anyone please help me, can an airline cancel a flight into one airport but then state you can fly into another airport on the same date (approx 200 miles away) and then refuse to pay for a flight onto the original airport?
Thanks for any help.

Read the terms and conditions for the ticket you purchased. If the airline no longer go to that airport then there is not alot they can do about it.

Icelandic air.
Booked to go from Manchester to Iceland return, return was via Glasgow. Got an email saying return leg cancel, but could return either 2 days earlier or later, both which we can not do. when I rung them they said I could go to Heathrow but they would not return me to Manchester. They are saying they only have an obligation to get us back into the country and not back to the airport we flew out of.I, not events, have the power to make me happy or unhappy today. Unfortunately Iceland is not (yet) part of the EU, so the EU regulations do not apply. If Iceland had been a member state, then Icelandair would have to meet the costs of getting you back to Manchester.
They seem to have offered you two options:
1) The original route on a change of date
2) An alternative route on the same date
I would also expect an option 3) A full refund of the return flight if 1 and 2 are not suitable. These options would be fairly normal for a standard economy ticket T&Cs (excluding the EU regs).
Basically see what you can negotiate with Icelandair, with a bit of pressure they may meet the costs of getting to Manchester, although they may not be obliged to. Perhaps see if there are any other ways of getting back to Manchester with other airlines (won't be direct), and then see if they will refund the return leg?
EDIT: It now seems that Iceland is a state that applies the EU regs, so much of the above may well be horsesh*t!0 -
Icelandair is not an EU airline, therefore EU261 does not apply to a flight returning to the UK. The airline itself is not known for its consumer friendly staff anywhere in the system, so good luck. I would ask for a refund and book something else but then I don't want to go to Iceland again!0

EDIT: Iceland does operate under the Reg as it has adopted it fully through its membership of the European Economic Area (EEA), along with Norway and Switzerland.
In which case, my bad, I thought it was based on EU membership.
Is there a definitive list anywhere of the "European" states that do and do not apply this regulation? I tried to find one before making my post, however couldn't seem to find anything.0 -
