Service to transfer old Kodak slides onto digital

Does anyone know of a service which is cost efficient that will take 100's of Kodak slides and trasnfer them onto digital format?

If so, any recommendations would be appreciated.

Can you not show the slides as normal, then take a digital picure of the image.

I would imagine this is how the cheaper option would be done anyway.

I take it buying a slide scanner and scanning them yourself isn't an option?

Not really - it is a question of time!

A slide scanner such as the Plustek 7400 can be had for less than £200 on ebay.
At the end of the day, the cost of transferring slides varies depending on factors such as end file type. For instance, a jpeg file at 10Mp for instance would be about 2.5Mb in size, whilst an uncompressed tif comes-in at a staggering 210Mb. The biggest cost isn't the scanning, it's the storage media used to put the images on for you.
A basic jpeg can't really be edited, but you can fit 1,500ish on a DVD, while a tif can be edited (white balance correction, colour-correction etc), but you would need an external HDD to store the files as you would only squeeze 20 on to a DVD, so to store 100 would require either 5 DVDs or 1x 50Gb HD.

Before you start looking, you need to decide on the file type you need the slides saved in.

2400 dpi is really low quality. To be useful, a scan should be done at at least 10Mp.

    135 film slides measure 36mm x 24mm

    scanned @ 1800 dpi : (36/25.4 x 1800) x (24/25.4 x 1800) = 4.3 megapixel

    scanned @ 2400 dpi : (36/25.4 x 2400) x (24/25.4 x 2400) = 7.7 megapixel

    scanned @ 7200 dpi : (36/25.4 x 7200) x (24/25.4 x 7200) = 69.4 megapixel

I guess at 2400dpi, if the lens and the CMOS CCD of the scanner are any good, the optical resolution probably wouldn't be so critical.

The professional range of film scanners, as used by the likes of Truprint all use an optical resolution of 7200dpi, or more.

The most popular models of professional film scanners seem to be the Plustek Opticfilm.. starting at £150.

Their basic service is cheap and will give you a file equivalent to just over 14 megapixels scanning at 3300dpi
