working my notice from an "unreasonable travelling" distance

My employer has announced that the whole department is being relocated and our consultation period is coming to an end. We've been offered a position in a different town but for me and a colleague the company accept the travelling distance would be "unreasonable" and that we would be offered redundancy if we declined the job transfer. Other members of the department are not so lucky as the company have deemed their location to be within "reasonable travelling distance" to the new office and so if they decline the job offer they will get nothing.
Me and my colleague have been informed that for the purpoes of seeing out the remainder of our notice period it would entail working part of the notice at our current location and then the remainder at the new location. If the reason for offering us redundancy in the first place is that the new location is too far then are they within their rights forcing us to move their for the short duration of working our notice period which is approx two months ?
They have offered to pay travelling expenses so do this cover them ?

How far is "unreasonable"?
They've offered travelling expenses, so they're not out to mug you off by the sounds of it.
They could go down the PILON route, which would basically mean you get paid off and don't have to work any notice.0
