White or Magnolia Walls??

We're completely redecorating a modern house with a view to getting it sold - quickly.

Would you paint the walls white (some consider this too stark) or magnolia? (some consider that magnolia has had its day once again).

Opinions, please.

I like white a lot, but it's not very practical as it can get grubby quickly. Maybe try a neutral colour like calico or hessian rather than magnolia if you don't want the peachy/pink tint :)

I think it depends on the house and what suits it. I hate white. Magnolia you can't go much wrong.

I think as long as it looks fresh, then people are going to potentially come in and put there own colours on the walls anyway.

Any neutral colour when freshly painted would be fine. If Brilliant White paint is substantially cheaper I'd use that. You're not going to live there, so it really doesn't matter all that much.

Forget the walls, it's all about the woodwork for me. A nice contrast between the doors and skirtings in either white (satinwood) or a light stain always makes the room look much more complete and tidy.

Choice of wall colour to satisfy question - Hessian (you got to get those skirtings crispy white though :D )

It doesn't matter. They're both the same price. There is no point spending extra on ever so slightly different colours as previously suggested.

I'd say magnolia because it has a warmer feel. How people can judge what is essentially 'cream' to be dated, I don't know. I wouldn't put it throughout my own house (I'd be more likely to pick a posh white), but it provides a blank canvas and doesn't offend anyone. We paint ceilings in magnolia as well.

Do not buy cheap paint though. Buy Dulux Trade or another decent trade paint that you can buy in bulk. If you buy cheap, cheap paint, you'll be painting coat after coat and end up spending as much as you would if you'd just bought decent paint that would easily do the job in one or two coats. Don't buy 'once' paint either, it's dreadful stuff.

I was just looking at the price of Wickes' trade paint. Bargain. However, most of the reviews say it's thick, dry and difficult to apply. Anyone have any different experience of it?

White is to harsh. If you wanted to do it ready to brighten up just to sell, as already been said white will be cheaper so maybe get a small tin of another deeper colour to add to the white. A deep blue; green; or orange could become a pastel.

I'd go with magnolia - it is the boring choice, but equally, is there a house builder in the country which doesn't paint all its houses magnolia? So its what people would automatically expect in a modern house, and they probably won't even register it, beyond thinking that it looks freshly painted. Its probably more important to make sure you do a good tidy job.

I agree with the cheap paint - it's a false economy.

I used to work in the development labs for a refinish company and we had a staff shop that was awesome when I was doing up the house :) Most of the paint and refinish products we have had for this one has come from a local community recycling scheme (they give it away for free, but with a suggested donation of 50p a litre) - all good brands; just open and a bit used out of the top; sometimes hardly noticable and I'm sure some of the cans we have have never been opened. I'd rather use half of a tin of good paint than a new can of cheap stuff any day.

I think it does depend on your house. I like minimal and ultra-modern design, so white appeals to me; but that look might not work well if you are selling a family home. I wouldn't paint in magnolia if I had to live in it - but to be fair, anyone that views your house will likely paint straight over it whatever you do.
