just phoned up a company to check whether a recorded delivery letter I sent had been received.

Eventually it was found - it had been stuffed in the post sack along with all the other post and had not been signed for. What the .... is that all about. I paid for a service and now it is quite possible the person who was supposed to sign for it could say they had not received it. Bloody livid with Royal Mail. how often does this happen - I suspect a lot.

Our postie never gets me to sign for deliveries. We've had to complain about him a couple of times for misdelivering mail (it was happening on a regular basis) and not closing our gate.

We live in a rural area and have a dog and chickens. Hubby spoke to him about leaving the gate open and also dropping the elastic bands which the chickens eat cos they think they're worms. He stopped dropping the bands, but still always left the gate open because he was too lazy to walk up the drive, so he'd open the gate, drive up and then drive off leaving the gate open.
