MSE News: Scottish Power to hike energy prices

Why 'sit down until 6am' when you can do the job in 2 minutes on a comp site though?
I would rather do my own calculations than trust the comparison websites. At least I am going to have a clearer picture what's happening. A clever excel spreadsheet doesn't take long to design and you can compare all tariffs at a glance.
So far I have compared all SP fixed and capped deals both SC and NSC and EDF deals. Currently working on EON and British Gas options.
I've found out one thing though - with our energy and gas usage it's cheaper to be on the standing charge option. I always thought that the NSC was cheaper!0 -
The 10% increase in SP's electricity price is a bit of an under exaggeration in my case too. Can't they do maths?....
I suspect they can; can you?
How have you calculated the average based on a sample size of 1???"Now to trolling as a concept. .... Personally, I've always found it a little sad that people choose to spend such a large proportion of their lives in this way but they do, and we have to deal with it." - MSE Forum Manager 6th July 20100 -
I got my welcome pack from Ovo today, all very straight forward... DD has been set at £1 lower than my current SP DD so I am quite happy with that. Only issue might be SP trying to charge me for moving before my contract ends, which I think is 31 July! I will be calling to complain if they do try and charge me, they can't expect people to hang around until the last minute and potentially miss the better tariffs.0

Here's what I found out - maybe someone will find this useful. I hope I haven't made any mistakes.
Please note that my original calculations for NSC tariffs were a bit out so I have now amended them.
Our electricity usage 2,187 kWh & gas usage 12,442 kWh
Current tariff - OES 10 - £639.59
OES 10 if we don't switch - £868.71
SP Capped June 13 NSC - £813.11
SP Capped June 13 SC - £814.03
SP Platinum Fixed Jan 14 NSC - £921.64
SP Platinum Fixed Jan 14 SC - £923.14
SP Unifi Capped Nov 13 NSC - £851.82
SP Unifi Capped Nov 13 SC - £852.97
EDF Fixed Sep 12 SC - £795.93
EDF Fixed Mar 14 SC - £824.41
EON Fixed Jun 13 NSC - £942.15
British Gas Fixed Jun 12 NSC - £958.55
OVO New Energy Fixed 12 mths SC - £778.91
OVO Green Energy Fixed 12 mths SC - £811.50
nPower Fixed Jul 12 SC - £809.53
nPower Fixed Jul 12 NSC - £797.66
This comparison excludes any discounts for DD payments and dual fuel. All prices are excluding VAT.0 -
if your a low users then NSC is actually more expensive , as the bulk of your costs are on the highest Tier 10

So in my mind EDF 2014 and SP Capped 2013 are the best options. Mine was the same, but elected to go for SP Capped 2013 rather than risk saving a couple of pounds and the 'switch' get messed up.
Up to date I have been happy with the way my SP account has run over the last 5 years0 -
Just checked my SP account and the switch from OES12 to SP Capped Jun 2013 has gone through fine. No mention or reflection on the account of exit fees.0

Is this in response to any particular post?
Are you comparing like with like?
In all the examples I have come across comparing like with like (i.e. the same supplier and the equivilent SC/NSC tariffs), then you will never pay more with a NSC tariff ... but you may pay less with a NSC tariff if you are a low user.
This is beacuse the tier 1 usage is capped so that you would never pay more than the equivilent SC tariff. If you don't use the tier 1 quantity, you will pay less with the equivilent NSC tariff."Now to trolling as a concept. .... That's a very general (and incorrect) thing to say tbh0 -

Are there cancellation charges on your tariff then? If so, and if you move before 31 July (and changeover takes place before then), and you do get charged cancellation fees, just out of interest what would be the crux of your argument when you call to complain?
I'm only asking the question because if you just tell them, "well you can't expect people to hang around until the last minute and potentially miss the better tariffs", that argument is not going to wash! (I'm not being rude here, just honest). You'll need a better argument than that to get out of paying cancellation charges which you, presumably, knew about when you signed up to whatever tariff you are on now.0
