Beware Europcar excess charges

We had a lovely holiday in Italy last month until our car was broken into and our luggage taken. Worse than that is the 900 euros europcar naples have taken from our credit card for some minor damage. We asked Fiat main dealers how much the damage would cost to repair and it came to around 300 euros maximum. Europcar seem to think they have the right to invent invoices amounting to over the excess however minor the damage caused. I suspect we are not the only ones caught by this fraud. BTW Lloyds and Consumers !!! are pursuing this.

I seem to be having a similar experience with Alamo in Geneva airport (also part of Europcar, I believe). My bank says that they have taken over £1000 (there was a minor scuff on the wheel arch), but it's not on my statement yet. I just called their customer services and the man couldn't find any record of a claim being made on my excess, so he's opened an investigation. I did get an excess insurance policy with carhireexcess.com but I need all the invoices etc from Alamo before I can claim.
Let's settle this like gentlemen: armed with heavy sticks

And you're Peter Duncan; I gave you fair warning
