Nationwide Visa Debit V Lloyds TSB Visa Debit in Spain

Hi,

I am trying to give someone a comparison betwen these cards in real terms and whilst I know that the Lloyds TSB card is more expensive to use, what I am not really sure of is just how much more expensive?

So I am hoping that someone can give me a comparison between the two cards based on a single 100 Euro withdrawal if we call the Visa rate £1.00 = Euro 1.10 ?

Thanks

numbers :)

Lloyds TSB: 2.99% loading + 1.5% cash withdrawal charge (min £2 max £4.50) (also charges for purchases)
Nationwide: 2% loading + £1 cash withdrawal charge

Using the exchange rate you specified:
€100 from Lloyds card costs about £95.63
€100 from Nationwide card costs about £93.73

    Use this.

Lloyds margin is 4.49% assuming its a cash withdrawal + £2 on the end of your result and 2.99% + £1 on the end of your result if its a debit card transaction

nationwide is 2% + £1 on the end for a cash withdrawal and 2% for debit card transactions.

Based on yesterdays rate of £1 = 1.14 eur , 100 euro visa debit transaction on Lloyds would cost you £93 and nationwide would cost you £92.
an atm withdrawl on lloyds would cost you £95 and nationwide woould cost you £93

    Thanks for the feedback. :)

Based on the comments it looks like there isn't a huge difference in the 2 cards if you withdraw reasonable sums of money, although I know 2% is 2%. :)

The difference is when you use the card for lots of small purchases.

The lloyds card charges a pound a swipe extra so a £10 transaction will cost almost £12, thats 20% markup.

If you go abroad a lot I'd consider changing bank accounts, or at least getting a fee-free credit card; otherwise I'd probably use a prepaid card.

I would advise getting the prepaid card as well. Travelex have a pretty decent one where they don't charge you a fee to withdraw from ATMs so basically you can make as many transactions as you want. I've used them plenty of times in the past in Cyprus and France without any problems, so I would imagine Spain would be the same.

Of course if you're going to mainland Spain and have a Santander UK account (Abbey, Alliance & Leicester), Santander do not charge you any fees to use their ATMs in Spain.
