Summer work for teachers?

Options
Hi,
I am in the early stages of my teaching career and although I am looking forward to my long summer break I can also see this as an opportunity to make a bit more cash as my OH and friends will all still be at work and I don't want to be bored!!
Any ideas...?

Loads out there - I've tried Kleeneze, Betterware, Party plan - Ann Summers, Blue Bella, PartyLite, Vie at Home and now currently enjoying Body Shop at Home - have found this to be the most profitable one to be honest :)
I work in a college supporting vulnerable adults - love my job but it is coming to an end in 3 weeks :( I've applied to a couple of Primary Schools - hoping to get in so that I can start my degree and then PGCE to teach, it has been my dream since I was 4 years of age and I'm now 37. Party plan has been a godsend for when my contract ends and finances are at an all time low.
Good luck with whatever you choose and congrats on the teaching :)

What about PGL and similar holiday schemes...if you can stand it after a year of teaching. You might prefer fruit picking or signing up for some mystery shopping- see the other thread on that.

I agree - PGL and holiday schemes would be great to add to your CV and experience :)
    Good luck :)

    I've been Money Tipped!
Quite a lot of councils offer summer schools for those who have fallen behind. V well paid. Only for qualified teachers though...by use of phrase "teaching career" I presume that's you?

If not, then I spent 3 summers of my degree working at Sea Life centre. I can do loads of lessons now on beachlife and even took my year 5 class on a trip to Weston super mare from the midlands so they could actually see a beach (half my class hadn't, bless em) Places like that just need summer help and love people like you who show they engage with kids and don't want work in september.

    Hiya

I have just started with a new party plan company (took me ages to commit as i wanted them to be ethical etc). We need extra income as our self employed business is having a hard time - so i joined Scentsy - wickless candles and warmers.

It is a new US company and joining fee for starter pack etc was cheap for what we got in it. It has only been released in Uk for month so it is new and people are finding it easy to sell the goods as they are new and very well made.

I would post a link to Scentsy but i dont think i am allowed - our mini business is on facebook though we are it makes scents - uk and Eurpean ind consultants....if you want to ask about the business feel free. I asked loads of people about party plan before i found something to suit me.

Commision is generous and we got a 5% bonus for great sales this month. commision is paid direct to the bank once a month...GREAT as you know you will have money to live on! You dont have to do partys - you can sell at fairs, face to face or in the school staff room - it really is a business to suit you.

    all the best

  • Hiya,

Thanks for all your replies they have been really helpful! I already do Avon and I am reluctant to get into anything similar as I think by the time I've got my head around it and built up some custom it would be time to go back to school, and I wouldn't have time to continue in September what with a full time job and Avon already.

I've looked into summer schools/clubs but not had any luck locally, I might get in touch with the nearest sea life centre but I'm not sure it would be worth the travel. Also going to look into the summer school for lower ability children and see if it's something my local authority offer.

Thanks again for your help, any other ideas? :)

Rates of pay will be better if you can do the job you're professionally qualified for. FE colleges; local unis and independent 'Educational holiday' companies are worth checking out - they often run summer schools, for adult learners or foreign students. Even if you're not teaching, you'll stand a good chance of getting an ancilliary job, if there are any going. Another year, what about exam marking? It's always been my idea of misery to do even more marking than I have to do, so I avoid it like the plague, but the money's reasonable and you'd be able to fund a holiday away somewhere and still get a break! Finally, the youth service or extended services in your area may have schemes they're setting up and recruiting for, as well as local voluntary organisations/church groups etc. They won't pay as much as local authority rates, but some will have paid work for leaders/facilitators. They sometimes have to, otherwise their schemes won't run.

  • Hi
I would second the trying to find a teaching job for foreign students - if you live anywhere near a touristy town - Oxford, Cambridge, Brighton, Bournemouth, London, Edinburgh, etc there will be language colleges which may offer summer schools - I have previously just called around the schools and got offered interviews through the telephone calls.
If you google EFL jobs as well there are a lot of companies who run out of boarding schools who offer these courses and you would get free accommodation plus about £200 a week to work at one.
Another option would be to tutor - try tutorjobs.co.uk - I advertised on there for a while and got quite a lot of response and is free to advertise - you just pay a % once you start tutoring itself so you can factor this into the amount you charge.
    Good luck!

I think a good idea would be to run a FREE Childrens club for the mothers who do not get six weeks off over the summer holidays and have to pay half their incomes to childcare cost. After all you are being paid for the six week holiday already. With the amount of holidays teachers get over the year and the chance to take on private students after school hours and bank teaching you have the opportunity to near double your income over the year. Not many other professions get this opportunity.
