Acer laptop problems - hard drive full?

Hi,

after having lots of problems with my acer running slowly, and a lot of 'program not responding' I decided the only real solution was to take it back to factory settings and start again.

There's a C and D drive - so all my files are on the D drive - so I'm was quite happy to lose whatever got deleted from C. I followed guide which said Alt F10 and then system restore etc. However, on starting the laptop up again, there's still over 27mb of 'stuff' on the C drive - out of a total of 32mb? This can't be right?

Thanks for your help in advance.

  • Hi Bern,

First up I assume you mean there's 27GB not 27MB (GB being x1000 MB)
Secondly, a system restore only roles back changes, it doesn't delete/wipe/format your hard drive so it is not the same as a factory restore or starting again.

If you have the original OS installation disc then pop it in, reboot, and follow the instructions. One of the options will be to format the hard drive, this is what deletes all of the information and lets you start again with a clean state. !Warning! a mistake with these format options may lead to you wiping both the C and D drives and merging them into one larger drive (or more accurately, one larger partition).

    Hope this helps :o)

Would suggest getting an external hard drive and putting all the files you can onto it first - everything you cannot do without. You could get a 320GB external hard drive for very little these days, back up everything from both of your hard drives onto it, and you have a computer you can start over with, do a factory restore or anything you want. At least with everything backed up you do not need to worry about any accidental deletions.

My guess is it is a fairly old laptop with hard drive of that size, it used to be considered normal to partition a hard drive that was over XGB! It is not necessary so would not suggest partitioning again (assuming it is partitioned and not two drives!).

I doubt if System Restore would go back far enough to take it back to factory settings, it would probably be easier if you have the original disks.

Just came on here to say back up first really, must stop wittering on!

thanks both. I've found 3 x recovery CDs numbered 1 2 and 3 (helpfully) however we have 2 x acer laptops! Is there any way of checking which laptop it relates to??

Your laptop does not have 2 hard drives, it has one physical drive which is partitioned into C and D. Doing a Factory Restore will normally wipe everything back to the way it came out of the factory (i.e. you will lose all your data). So check the manual before you do a Factory Restore-it's entirely different to a System Restore. Or back up anyway.

Thanks. I understand there's only 1physical drive split into 2, but I'm thinking that is how it was when we first got it, so to do factory restore I'll still have c and d drive?

You'll still have a partitioned drive, yes, but will it preserve your data on the D partition? Check the manual first.

Did you factory restore, or system restore?

If the former, was it apparent that it worked, ie looked like it was at purchase.

Have a look where the space is going in explorer or using windirstat

    Which operating system?

If you want advice on speed, post a hijackthis log, and if XP, your commit charge and physical memory total which can be found in task manager, performance

Ok I did the system restore with 3 x discs. Of 32.5 gb on c drive, there's only 8.39 gb free. I'm running windows vista.

    On windirstat:
    Windows 4.9g b
    Program files 3.5 gb
    Files. Page file.sys. 1.3 gb
    Hiberfil.sys 1013.9 gb
    Bootmgr 325.4 kb

And then various smaller ones. In the bottom right corner of windirstat it says ram usage 44.1 MB

    It's still running slow

The term system restore means something different to factory restore/system recovery/erecovery. Those figures don't add up to 24MB. Did it look like it was at purchase afterwards?

    post a hijackthis log.

thanks 'closed'! hijack this log below. Laptop is still running a bit slow, and at the moment I've got it plugged in to hub as I've lost the wireless connection - not sure how to get it back. How can I find out what driver I've got for network? Acer shows lots of new drivers.....

anyway:- first things first: log below.
