I wouldn't be too worried about divulging information. They'll be a new seller so they could buy laptops from where I get mine, put them on Ebay for £20-£30 less than me but I'd be more likely to sell mine first due to the TSR and level of feedback.
  • Start with deciding what you would like to sell - its always more motivating when you know and beleive in your product.

Find out how much items in the category sell for on ebay and in shops, and look at ebay trends (such as whether all the sales are BIN, are there a lot of auctions that sell too, how many sales have the current sellers made).

I have horses and like to sell equestrian things. I myself use the things I sell frequently so have lots of prior knowledge. I know how much things cost in tack shops. I know what second hand items sell on ebay and which ones don't. I can go to a car boot sale and know what I can resell for a profit. I can go to tack shop closing down sales and know what sells for a profit. I buy local 'pick up only products' (at low prices)and sell them with P&P. I found a wholesaler that was happy to sell small quantites at first - but like soolin mentioned - everyone else caught on and bought from them too. However, this gave me just enough umph with the more legit wholesalers to get a trade account. If you have the passion and knowledge you'll make it work - but if you jump on a bandwagon selling things that seem to work for other people it wont be long before everyone else catches on and the market becomes saturated.

    Good luck!
I seldom end up where I wanted to go, but almost always end up where I need to be

    I've been Money Tipped!
    I'll help you!

There's a man who pays between £200 and £300 daily in postage at the post office selling his mens designer suits.

Dunno where he gets them from, but he sure does know his market!

Any help or ideas would be hugely appreciated, thank you. :T

Make sure to do your research carefully, if you find a wholsaler TOO easily it means everyone else has found it too.

I bought a load of stuff from a very easy to find wholesaler and a year later ended up selling most of it at a loss as it just would not sell.

I actually gave some of it away to make room in my garage.:o

Look at completed listing to see what has actually SOLD and at what price, not just what price people are listing at like I did.

I just saw the price I could buy it at and the price people were advertising it at and saw easy money.
But its only a profit if it ACTUALLY sells.

    Good luck.

Lighten up people. The OP is in a tough place ATM with the prospect of a drop in income looming and has asked a perfectly innocent question, no doubt about one of many options for making ends meet in the short term. No need to jump down down their thoat.

Budgie - good luck to you, hope you find a solution soon.
Not particularly singling out the OP but I think people get annoyed about posts like this as many think there is not much to selling on Ebay (or indeed anywhere), there are skills and knowledge that go with it that you can't acquire overnight. I think I've mentioned before that someone new tried to copy exactly how and what I was selling a couple of years ago, they pretty much did exactly what I do, but because they had no customer base, no history with my supplier and didn't know what they were doing they lost a lot of money very quickly and stopped after a couple of months.
As others have said sourcing product is only a small part of the process. An old business friend of mine used to say "Anyone can buy something, not everyone knows how to sell", this still holds true.

I just spotted a hole in the market. It is not one that I think I will persue but if any one else wishes to here it is.
Do a search on ebay for self inking stamps. You will see that the majority are sold from America and not the UK.
It would take some research for supplier etc.
So there you are one freebie.
