Yes, I have also noted this porridge problem.

I reduced portion size and made it quite thick.

It seems to be caused by excess volume and can be a great problem if I go for a walk just after breakfast!

It has nothing to do with oats as I can eat oat cakes or haggis all day long without any problems!

may I make a suggestion? I have noticed that some supermarkets carry a gluten free section - have you looked in there for their alternative to porridge oats? as you say you have tried making it with water and still had the problem! Its just a thought hun, I had a gluten intolerant friend and she used to buy a porridge which was gluten free - but for the life of me I cant remember what it actually was or was called!
  • Hi guys

Just a reminder if there's a problem that may be medical it's well worth asking your GP to ensure you're getting the right help.

    Andrea :)

Hi, yes I have a gluten free porridge and most supermarkets do their own, it is more expensive than normal porridge but a bag will usually do me a couple of weeks depending on portion size! You will find it in the free from section. I micro mine and have started whizzing it in the mini chopper when it is dry before I cook, this way it is like the ready to micro versions! Hope that makes sense!

Thank you MSE Andrea - but its not on medical terms I suggested the gluten free one - its dietary!
  • wow.. the mystery is solved.

Sorry to dredge up such an old thread, but the issue is very much current for me! I found the thread while googling porridge and heartburn.

A few years ago I started to get severe heartburn. I assumed the usual causes such as stress, alcohol and poor diet. Despite changing these things the heartburn continued, for years in fact I'm sorry to say.

Now while this was happening I had started eating porridge every morning, due to all it's reported benefits for digestion and keeping you full. I made it with water and no sugar, to be extra healthy and low calorie. It was great I thought, and not once did I suspect it as the cause of my heartburn......

It's embarrassing that it took this long to work out that porridge was the cause. I had suspicions, but dismissed them because porridge is never listed as a heartburn trigger. Porridge is always lauded as being so good for you. I finally twigged for sure this morning, after eating some pre-prepared porridge (with sugar added) last night. I now have the most severe heartburn. There is the theory that because it's harder to digest means more stomach acid. And that has to be the answer (I'm not gluten intolerant, and take porridge with water).

So I thought I'd chime in here encase it helps anyone else. Porridge has great benefits, but one of those benefits can also be extremely destructive!
  • Hello Confuzzled, Have you thought it may be partly anxiety or worry related also
as this can also increase heartburn, I've read? Just a thought, not an expert myself.
