Have you tried a different kind of liquid? I make porridge with almond milk and it's lovely - oat milk is nice too. It might be the 'stodge' that's making you unwell but if it's the dairy, a non-dairy milk might help.
i don't think it's the dairy as i regulary have milk with no bother, however it may be the combination of oats AND milk maybe so if i remember next time i do an asda shop i'll try to pick up some almond milk, i think maybe oat milk with oats might push iti'll try anything at this point!

I think you are probably intollerant to something in the oats. I would stop eating it ASAP. there are other healthy forms of breakfast which are not particularly expensive.
i need to go to the docs fairly soon for my knee and back problems, if i haven't resolved it myself before then i'll mention it to her offhandedly, maybe she'll send me for an allergy test or be able to offer me some sort of medical help, i'm sure she'll agree the health benefits of oats are very worth it for my personal case but you may be right, i might not have a choice but for now i'll try a few more things... i live in hope!0 -
SNAP! I get heartburn too with porridge and most other cereals that have milk on. I was quite miserable at first as I love porridge but the heartburn made me more miserable.
During the last few years I seem to have become intolerant to milk and anything with milk in that is in liquid form (e.g custard, yoghurt, milkshakes etc) sets off chronic heartburn - (porridge and cereals defo the worst though.)
I have found - that if I drink a glass of water/cup of tea about an hour before brekkie it is a little better but other than that - I have to avoid cereals and porridge.
Like you even porridge made with water can set off my heartburn - but I can eat flap jacks - so I don't think it is the oats in my case. I think it is fluid with cereals - my stomach struggles to cope with the combination of gluten and excess fluid. Smaller meals and as OP suggested avoiding drinking and eating at the same time can help a lot. x x0 -

i was just doing a bit deeper googling and was coming to the same conclusion, that perhaps if i just tried eating a smaller portion and make sure to not have anything to drink with it maybe it would be ok (and i'm def gonna soak it overnight too because that helped stave off the onset for longer than normal when i tried it) so thanks for that, sounds like another thing to try...please let it work:o0 -
I love my porridge for breakfast but no idea re this problem I'm afraid. The only thing i can think (other than previous suggestions) is have you tried a different brand of oats?? Eg I don't like Sainsburys cos they have wheatgerm in to and I don't like the texture........just a thought!

hmm that's a thought alwaysallie, i normally use either asda or tescos value brand, if nothing else works i could try a finer milled oat or hmm, i could dust off my food processor and try putting them through that first THEN soaking them first, one post i read when googling said they have no issues with the instant oats but they do with regular oats so to me that implies that because they are already quite finely cut they cook faster and break down faster too...
thanks to everyone these suggestion have the rusty cogs in my mind moving again... i'm determined so i am0 -
let us know how you get on confuzzled. I soaked my porridge oats overnight resulting in a creamy smoothe consistency when cooked up. They were still in there solid form when eating though so maybe whizzing them in the food pro might just help.
Migh be an idea to test yourself - starting from a teaspoon one day working your way up in increments until you're on a bowl. That way you could 1) see if it is the portion size and 2) if you're allergic to the oats as it would show up surely even with a small portion.
Good luck!0 -

this works for me, and its what I was going to suggest. It works for me. fwiw I eat it with fruit a lot and was worried I'd have to give that up but reducing the portion did the trick for me.0 -
